BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The University of Bridgeport scored four unanswered goals in the first 23 minutes of action en route to a 5-0 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference women's soccer soccer action.
UB, which is ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II East Region poll, improved to 6-3-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the ECC. Daemen, which was playing its third-straight regionally-ranked opponent, dropped to 5-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the league.
The Purple Knights, who entered the game with a league-high 22 goals scored, were paced by junior M/F Nara DaCosta (Pancas, Brazil) who totaled two goals—giving her a team-high nine on the season.
The Daemen offense, which entered the game ranked fourth among ECC teams in goals scored (20), was limited to just six total shots and two shots on goal.
Bridgeport took advantage of a Daemen miscue just two minutes into the game. A Daemen defender attempted to clear the ball out of bounds from in front of the Wildcat net, but her effort sailed right into the upper right corner of the Daemen goal.
The hosts doubled their lead just four minutes later when junior M/F Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) won a 50/50 ball in front of the Daemen net and slid a low shot past Daemen net minder Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) from 15 yards out. It marked the seventh goal of the year for Doyle.
DaCosta scored her first of the game in the 18th minute and the Wildcats found themselves down 4-0 midway through the first half after freshman Anisha Hill (Woking, England) scored off a feed from Doyle at 22:44. DaCosta netted her second of the game 13 minutes into the second half to close out the scoring.
UB finished with a 22-6 edge in total shots and a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts also posted a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
White went the distance in net for the Wildcats and finished with seven saves. Senior Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) stopped two shots for Bridgeport en route to her third shutout of the season.
Daemen returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 10) when it hosts Queens College in an ECC game.
