BETHPAGE, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's cross country team placed 20th out of 24 schools at the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region Championship meet held today at Bethpage State Park. The 10K race is held to determine the region's three national championship-qualifying teams, as well as three national championship-qualifying individuals.
The East Region of NCAA Division II is comprised of teams affiliated with the East Coast Conference, the Northeast-10 Conference and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Adelphi University of the NE-10 served as the regional host.
The top three teams all hail from the NE-10. Stonehill College claimed its second-straight regional title and its third crown over the past six years. The Skyhawks placed five runners among the top-22 finishers and scored 52 points. American International College had four runners among the top-15 and placed second (63 points), while Southern Connecticut State University placed third with 101 points—edging out Southern New Hampshire University (109 points) for the third and final NCAA Championship berth. The 2018 NCAA Division II National Championships are set to take place Dec. 1 outside Pittsburgh, Pa.
AIC's Leakey Kipkosgei (Kapsabet, Kenya) claimed the individual title for the third-straight year, as he paced the field of 170 runners with a time of 31:11.50—just four seconds ahead of runner-up Lucas Taxter (Readville, Mass.) of Stonehill.
The top three individuals from non-qualifying teams also picked up their bids to the national championship meet. Those went to Mark Corrigan (Wilmington, Del.) of Wilmington University, Chris Davitt (Delmar, N.Y.) of Le Moyne College and Noah Samatei (Eldoret, Kenya) of New York Institute of Technology. The trio finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
