PETERSBURG, Fla. - Five players scored in double figures to lift nationally-ranked Florida Southern College to a 96-55 victory over Daemen College here today in final round action of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic. FSC, which is ranked in both the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (No. 11) and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (No. 14) national polls, improved to 4-1 on the season, while Daemen dropped to 2-3. It marked just the second all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Mocs, and the first since the 2000-01 season. FSC rode hot shooting (32-for-61 FG [52.5%], 13-for-24 3PT [54.2%]) to their second win in the series. It also staved off an 0-2 weekend for the Mocs who suffered a 74-67 loss to Le Moyne College in yesterday's tournament opener. FSC returns nine players, including four starters, from their 2017-18 team that went 25-5, won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament championship and made their third straight NCAA Tournament berth. Mackenzie Steele led the Mocs' three-point shooting barage, coming off the bench to hit 7-of-9 from downtown to account for all of her team-high 21 points. Anja Fuchs-Robetin shot 8-for-11 from the field and totaled 18 points. The Mocs also got double-figure scoring Camille Giardina (13 points, six rebounds), Mercedez Claybrone (13 points, six rebounds) and Monet Burkett (11 points). Bekki Kalaydjiev dished out a game-high six assists. The Mocs totaled 20 assists on their 32 field goals. Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) notched 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting to pace the Wildcats. Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.) narrowly missed double figures with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, and freshman Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) chipped in with seven points. After Sarah Young (Depew, N.Y.) knotted the score at 7-7 midway through the opening quarter, the Mocs signaled for a timeout and emerged with a 14-6 run to close the period. Burkett hit a three-pointer and had an old-fashioned three-point play, and Steele connected on a pair of trifectas in the run. Daemen cut the lead to six (21-15) with a layup by Filbert to open the second quarter, but that's as close as they would get. Five of the Mocs' first seven field goals in the period were three-pointers, including two more by Steele, as they opened up a 52-24 lead at halftime. Daemen was coming off a hard-fought 57-49 loss to tournament host Eckerd yesterday afternoon, a game in which the Wildcats led with eight minutes remaining. Eckerd is ranked fourth in the D2SIDA South Region poll. The Wildcats will look to jump back in the win column next week when they face Gannon University in Erie, Pa. on Wednesday, Nov. 28. That game will be the Wildcats' final tune-up before starting East Coast Conference play the following Wednesday (Dec. 5) at Roberts Wesleyan College.
