Custodi Places 10th At Collegiate National Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. - Redshirt sophomore Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) finished 10th among all participants from NCAA Division II teams at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships which were held today at Tempe Town Lake. In a new scoring format, results were separated for Division I, II and III triathletes, as well as those from collegiate club teams.

Today's triathlon featured a 750-meter swimming portion, a 20-kilometer cycling portion and a five-kilometer running portion. Custodi completed the course in 1:13:17, bettering her time from last season's national meet by more than 90 seconds. Last season, Custodi placed 44th overall and 13th among Division II participants with a time of 1:14:56.

Freshman Nicole Schmidt (Vienna, Va.) also competed for Daemen today. She placed 21st in the Division II grouping with a time of 1:25:00.

Jordan Grants from Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) was the top performer in the Division II grouping today, finishing the course in 1:09:07.

The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs. At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 25 schools in the country (10 affiliated with NCAA Division II) to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.

The Wildcats' 2018-19 season will continue during the spring semester.
