EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Daemen College men's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Alma College here today in a non-conference dual-match held at the Michigan State University Tennis Center.
Daemen improved to 4-2, while Alma—a NCAA Division III member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association—dropped to 2-1. Daemen is now 23-10 all time against Division III opponents. Today's match marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Daemen opened the match by prevailing in all three doubles matches. Sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) cruised to an 8-1 win over seniors BJ Schuette (Jenison, Mich.) and Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich.) at No. 1 singles. Juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) improved to 5-2 on the year after posting an 8-4 win over senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich.) and Tristen Fox (DeWitt, Mich.) at second doubles. Senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and sophomore James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) team up for the first time this season at No. 3 doubles and outlasted freshman Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich.) and senior Quinn Summerfield (Lowell, Mich.), 9-8.
The Wildcats dominated during singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. The most competitive match came at No. 1 singles, where freshman Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Schutte. Gonzalez Villegas defeated Van Fleet (6-2, 6-1) at second singles, while Marintez improved to 5-0 in dual match play this year with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ackerman at No. 3 singles. Veitengruber, Wilde and freshman Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) also picked up singles singes for the Wildcats. Veitengruber cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fox at No. 4, Wilde posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ralston at No. 5 and Martinez Hernandez defeated Summerfield, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.
Daemen is idle until next Saturday (Feb. 17) when it travels to Mercyhurst University for a non-league match.
