Edinboro, a PSAC Tournament finalist and NCAA Tournament team last season, improved to 4-1 on the season, while Daemen dropped to 4-6. Edinboro opened up a 3-0 lead after sweeping through doubles play. Senior Vitor Albanese (Barueri, Brazil) and junior Mateus Santos (Brasilia, Brazil) got past Daemen's Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) without dropping a game (8-0) at the top of the lineup. In second doubles, EU's Daniel Fernandez (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Kevin Mboko (Burlington, Canada) won 8-3 over Daemen juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain). Christian Roettger and Thomas McCoy (Miami, Fla.) outlasted Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) 8-5 to complete the sweep. For the second consecutive match, Daemen mounted a strong comeback in singles play. Ruiz Martinez, Wilde and senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) earned wins in third, fourth and sixth singles respectively, all in straight sets. Ruiz Martinez won 7-5, 6-3 over Santos. Wilde took down Roettger 7-5, 6-2. Veitengruber bested McCoy 7-5, 6-1. For Veitengruber, it was his team-leading ninth singles win of the season, extending his team records for career singles wins (43) and career combined wins (72). The 3-0 deficit proved too much to overcome, however, as Edinboro closed out the victory with wins by Albanese, Fernandez and Mboko in the first, second and fifth singles slots. Daemen returns to action with a neutral site match vs. Wayne State University on March 13 in Orlando, Fla. The Wildcats play four matches in as many days during their upcoming trip to The Sunshine State.  Print Friendly Version
