Wildcats Fall In Florida Opener

BOX SCORE

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to Wayne State University (Mich.) in a non-conference dual match today at the Star Island Tennis Club, the first of five matches for the Wildcats this week in The Sunshine State. WSU, an affiliate of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, jumped over the .500 mark with today's win, moving to 7-6 on the season. Daemen dropped its fifth straight match to fall to 4-7. The Wildcats were bidding for the first-ever win against a GLIAC affiliate.

The Warriors opened things up by sweeping through doubes play. Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany), a first team All-GLIAC honoree last season, teamed with Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) to set the tone with an 8-3 win in first doubles over Daemen's Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany). In second doubles, WSU's Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) scored an 8-4 win over David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain). And, Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich.) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany) and Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.).

The Warriors continued their strong showing as the match shifted to singles play. Vane, Mertz and Karcz got through their matches relatively unscathed in positions one, two and three, respectively. Vane, a second team All-GLIAC pick last year, downed DC freshman Georg 6-1, 6-0. Mertz, an honorable mention All-GLIAC pick, ousted Gonzalez Villegas 6-1, 6-2. And, Karcz won 6-2, 6-1 over Ruiz Martinez, Daemen's returning second team All-East Coast Conference performer.

Things were a little tighter in singles positions four through six, but still all went the way of the Warriors. Reed bested Wilde (6-3, 6-4); Sammons took down Veitengruber (7-5, 6-3); and Potter bested Williamson III (7-5, 6-1).

Today's match was Daemen's first since a 6-3 loss to Edinboro University on Feb. 25. The Wildcats are playing in the State of Florida for the first time since March of 2015.

Daemen looks to return to the win column later this evening when facing fellow East Region member Post University out of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. That match, originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Gatlin Tennis Center, has been moved to 7 p.m. at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando. A preview of all five matches this week was posted to daemenwildcats.com yesterday, and tonight's match will now feature live streaming video.
