Wildcats Drop ECC Opener To Defending Champion Queens

BOX SCORE

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Knocking off the defending East Coast Conference champs proved too tall of task for the Daemen College men's tennis team as the Wildcats suffered a 7-2 loss to Queens College at the QC Tennis Center this afternoon. The match marked the the 2017-18 ECC opener for both teams. Queens, which was picked first in the ECC preseason poll after capturing their first league title since 2012 last season, improved to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the league with today's win. Daemen fell to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Wildcats got on the board with an 8-2 win in the No. 1 doubles position. Sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) teamed up to knock off QC's duo of Lucas Martinez (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Stanislas Bedrune (Ventabren, France). For Williamson, it was his 10th doubles win of the season, pulling into a tie for the team lead this season and becoming just the sixth player in team history to reach double-figure doubles wins in a single season.

But, Queens regrouped with wins in second and third doubles. Jose Zurro (Valladolid, Spain) and Miguel Bendito (Maracay, Venezuela) bested Daemen juniors Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) and David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) 8-3 in the second position. And in a competitive third doubles match, it was QC's Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (Goiania, Brazil) and Nick Volos (New York, N.Y.) winning 8-5 over the senior-freshman combo of Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico).

The host Knights dominated singles play with wins in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions. Zurro (6-3, 6-2 in No. 1), Bendito (6-4, 1-6, 10-8 in No. 4) and Volos (7-5, 7-6 in No. 5) all registered their second points of the match. Martinez (6-3, 6-3 in No. 3) and Bedrune (6-4, 6-2 in No. 6) picked up the additional singles wins for the Knights.

Only Ruiz Martinez broke through for Daemen. A second-team All-ECC selection last season, Ruiz Martinez rallied for a 2-6, 7-6, 11-9 win in the No. 2 singles position over Andrade. The win brings Ruiz Martinez into a tie with Veitengruber for the team lead in singles wins this season with 12. It's also just one win shy of Veitengruber's team record for singles wins in a season. Ruiz Martinez, who ranks fourth in team history with 22 singles wins, becomes just the sixth player in team history with at least 40 combined singles/doubles wins for a career.

Daemen looks to jump back in the win column tomorrow when facing ECC foe Saint Thomas Aquinas College in a 10 a.m. match at the Washington Township Tennis Club,
