Ruiz Martinez, who became Daemen's first-ever all-conference honoree last season, has now won five straight singles matches to run his season record to 13-6, becoming just the second player in team history to record at least 13 singles wins in a season. He did so with a three-set victory (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) today over STAC's Jakob Ljungberg (Stockholm, Sweden), matching teammate Mark Veitengruber's (Rockford, Mich.) team record. Veitengruber accomplished the feat during the 2015-16 season, his sophomore campaign. Ruiz Martinez is now 23-13 in singles play during his Daemen career. Unfortunately for coach Stephen Beatty's Wildcats, that's the lone point they were able to manage today. STAC swept three competitive doubles matches, winning 8-5, 8-6 and 8-5 in the first, second and third positions, respectively. In other singles action, sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) took Paul Voigt (Cologne, Germany) to three sets, but fell 7-5, 4-6, 1-0. STAC won in straight sets at first, third, fifth and sixth singles. The Spartans improved to 9-3 on the season, and 2-0 in league play with the victory. Daemen dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-2 in the league. The Wildcats close a string of 10 consecutive road matches by visiting Northeast-10 Conference affiliates Franklin Pierce University (Friday, Mar. 30) and Southern New Hampshire University (Saturday, Mar. 31) next weekend.Print Friendly Version
