FPU, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference and fellow member of the NCAA Division II East Region, improved to an even 7-7 this season with tonight's win. Daemen fell to 5-13. Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) put Daemen on the board early with an 8-3 win in first doubles over FPU's Roberto Chong (Puigpunyent, Spain) and Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.). The Daemen duo is now 4-5 together this season. For Williamson, it was his 11th doubles win of the season, most ever for a Daemen freshman and one shy of the team's single season record set last year by David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia). The Ravens regrouped and took control by winning the two remaining doubles matches. Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) and Marcus Lawrence (Acton, Mass.) were 8-4 winners in second doubles over Gonzalez Villegas and his partner, Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain). James Bisazza (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.) won 8-5 over DC's Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) in third doubles. The hosts carried that momentum into singles play where they swept matches in the first through fourth positions. Chong (6-3, 6-2 in No. 1), Bisazza (6-0, 7-5 in No. 2), Barak (6-1, 6-2 in No. 3) and Schadt (6-2, 7-5) picked up the wins for FPU. Bisazza's win snapped Ruiz Martinez's five-match winning streak, keeping the Daemen junior at 13 singles wins this season. Ruiz Martinez was looking to set a new team record for singles wins in a season. Singles matches in the fifth and sixth positions went unfinished this evening. Daemen returns to action tomorrow afternoon against two-time defending NE-10 champion Southern New Hampshire University. Print Friendly Version
