Harris Named To ECC Championship All-Tournament Team

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Daemen College men's basketball player Breon Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) has been named to the All-Tournament Team for the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament, which wrapped up today at Voller Athletic Center on the campus of the Roberts Wesleyan College.

Harris, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game while shooting 48-percent from the field (10-for-21) over Daemen's two contests in the tournament. Harris helped Daemen advance to semifinal round where the third-seeded Wildcats suffered a 70-67 loss to second-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College.

In a 75-69 defeat of sixth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan College in the opening round, Harris totaled 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals. The five steals were two shy of the his career-high (7) he set during a win over LIU Post on Jan. 12. He scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half and connected on two three-pointers in the game. It marked Daemen's third win over RWC this season, and the 15th-straight win for the Wildcats in the all-time series.

Harris followed up with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 70-67 semifinal loss to St. Thomas Aquinas. His three-pointer with five seconds to play made it a two-point game, but after the Spartans tacked on a free throw the Wildcats were unable to get off a game-tying three pointer before the final buzzer sounded.

Harris, who also earned third-team All-ECC honors this year, was a big reason Daemen won 17 of 19 games after he was inserted into the starting lineup back on Dec. 31. After producing just 3.1 points on 32-percent shooting while coming off the bench in the team's first 11 games, Harris contributed 13.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.7 steals per game—while shooting 51.4 percent from the field as a starter. After totaling just three three-pointers in the first 21 games of his career, Harris has made at least one in 18 of the last 19 games and shot 38-percent (27-71) from long range over the last 19 games.

He was named the ECC Player of the Week for Jan. 8-14 after leading Daemen to a trio of home wins. In that stretch, he eclipsed his career-high for both points and rebounds in consecutive games. He scored 16 points, grabbed seven boards and swiped a career-high seven steals in the Wildcats' eight-point win over LIU Post on Jan. 12. Harris followed that up by shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the field while totaling 23 points and eight rebounds in a 93-82 win over NYIT. On Jan. 28, Harris led a wild second-half comeback that came up just short against nationally-ranked Bridgeport. With Daemen trailing by 24 points, Harris erupted for 22 points in the final 13:17 of the game as Daemen cut the deficit to two points in the game's final minute. He ended the game with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go with seven rebounds and six steals.

Harris is producing 9.6 points per game, and he presently ranks second in the ECC and ninth nationally in total steals (70). He also ranks third in steals per game (2.3), eighth in assists per game (3.1) and seventh in total assists (94) among the ECC leaders. He is the first Daemen player to record 70 or more steals in a season since John Russell totaled 73 in 1990-91. His 70 total steals rank third among Daemen's single season record holders.

Harris was joined on the all-tournament team by Justin Reyes, James Mitchell and Jamar Sudan of ECC champion St. Thomas Aquinas, Sam Joseph and Vakas Ikbal of the University of Bridgeport, and Curtis Jenkins of Molloy College. Reyes was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Daemen's further postseason fate hangs in the balance as they await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show which will air on NCAA.com tonight (Sunday, March 4) at 10:30 p.m. The Wildcats are on the bubble for one of the five at-large bids that are up for grabs in the East Region. Daemen is looking to make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.
