Custodi, Igoe Visit Medal Stand In Final Triathlon Competition Of Season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Redshirt freshman Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) and senior Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y.) finished first and second, respectively, in the female 20-24 age bracket at the St. Anthony's Triathlon held in and around Vinoy Park today. The sprint-style triathlon featured over 600 total participants competing on a course that included a 750 meter open-water swim in Tampa Bay, a 20 kilometer cycling portion and a five kilometer running portion.

Custodi, who just Friday was named Daemen's 2017-18 Female Newcomer of the Year, not only placed first for her age group with a final time of 1:08:13, but she was also fourth among the 288 total female entrants, and 23rd overall. She was running second in her division after completing the swimming portion in 10:59, and went on to complete the cycling (30:20) and running (21:55) portions faster than anyone in that bracket. It marked the fourth time in five total events this season that Custodi has visited the medal stand; the lone outlier was the Collegiate National Championship held last November 5 when she finished 44th out of 81 competitors.

Not to be overshadowed was the performance of Igoe who was competing as a collegiate triathlete for the final time. She completed the course 1:16:43, placing second in her division, 22nd among all females, and 92nd overall. She ranked fourth in her division with a 34:47 cycling time, and then made up ground with a 24:41 time in the 5K. Igoe's 5K time was the second fastest in her division behind only Custodi.

Also competing for the final time as a Wildcat today was senior Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park, N.Y.). She finished just out of medal contention, placing fourth in the 20-24 age bracket, 47th among all females, and 182nd overall with a time of 1:23:42.

The event today marked the final competition this season for Daemen, the third in team history. The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 23 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
