The Wildcats improved to 1-1 on the season, and registered their first win over Malone since 2006. The Wildcats and Pioneers are each former members of the now-defunct American Mideast Conference, and today's meeting was the teams' first since 2010. Malone had won their last four meetings with the Wildcats heading into today's game. The Pioneers fell to 0-2 on the season after suffering their second straight defeat to an East Coast Conference opponent; Roberts Wesleyan College knocked off the Pioneers' 3-1 in their opener this past Thursday. Daemen excelled over Malone in the shots department, which ultimately gave them the win. The Wildcats rattled off 13 shots with eight on target, while allowing just three shots and one on goal from the Pioneers. Eight of Daemen's shot attempts came in the second half, ultimately getting one to the back of the net from Cupello, a shot from 20 yards out that will go down as the second marker of his career. Freshman goalkeeper Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany) went the distance between the pipes for the Wildcats. He needed to make just a single save to record the first shutout of his career. Malone goalkeeper Alexandre Durand was able to make six saves in a losing effort. Both of the goals in Cupello's career have been game-winners. His last goal came in a 4-0 win over Shepherd University on September 25, 2017 which was also the Wildcats' last shutout victory. Coming off a 1-1 road trip the Buckeye State, the Wildcats have another road game when they travel to Syracuse to take on Le Moyne College one week from today (Saturday, Sept. 8) before making their home debut at Karrer Field on Monday, September 10 against Gannon University.
