WILMINGTON, Del. - The Daemen College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 5-2 non-conference meeting with Goldey-Beacom College today at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field. The Wildcats gave up five goals in a game for the first time since 2016.
After a 5-2 win against Bloomfield College in their season opener this past Thursday, the Wildcats had the tides turned on them today as they were seeking their first 2-0 start since 2014. Goldey-Beacom, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, improved to 2-0 with its second win over an East Coast Conference opponent in as many games. The Lightning defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College 4-0 Thursday in their season opener.
The Lightning struck first with a goal at the 7:18 mark from freshman forward Melayna Immediato off a pass from sophomore forward Alanna Speaks. It was the first goal of the season for the Delaware native.
The Wildcats did not take long to equalize as sophomore midfielder
Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored her second of the year just six minutes later.
Toward the end of the second half, the Lightning scored two goals in a three-minute span. The first came at the 39:09 mark on a 20-yard shot from Samantha Carey, who beat sophomore goalkeeper
Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) over the top. The third goal for the Lightning came from a cross on the right wing from sophomore midfielder Sophie Greenwood, which was then headed in by Speaks, the reigning CACC Rookie of the Year.
In the second half, the Wildcats answered again with a goal from freshman forward
Kayleigh Daniels (Grand Island, N.Y.), her first as a Wildcat, making it a one-goal game. At the 77:58 mark, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick. Hanes stepped up for the penalty and shot the ball into the lower left corner, but senior goalkeeper Marta Lopez guessed right, saving the penalty to keep the Lightning ahead.
The Wildcats then gave up two goals in nearly a minute's time to leave the ending result at 5-2. Speaks scored her second goal of the game and Cliona Crammond tallied the fifth goal onto the score sheet.
The Wildcats conceded 15 fouls and failed to capitalize on some chances inside the box.
Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) hit the woodwork in the 67th minute that also would've tied the game at 3-3. The Wildcats were able to get 14 shots off with only five on goal while the Lightning tested White with 12 shots on goal out of its 18 total attempts.
The Wildcats will stay in Wilmington to take on Wilmington University on Monday at 11 a.m.
