AMHERST, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) scored two goals to propel the Daemen College men's soccer team to a 2-1 home victory over Molloy College in East Coast Conference play at Karrer Field.
With the victory, the Wildcats move to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the ECC. Molloy now moves to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in ECC play with the loss.
The Wildcats broke down Molloy's defense early in the game when sophomore midfielder
Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) received a pass inside the box which he poked onto Keem. Keem brought the ball onto his left foot and scored his first goal of the season.
With only a minute left in the first half, a penalty was granted for Molloy after a foul in the box. Midfielder Anthony Cestaro stepped up to take the penalty, which was then saved by freshman goalkeeper
Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany). However, the referee ordered for Molloy to take another penalty. His reasoning was that a Daemen player was standing inside the box. With the second chance for the Lions, midfielder Matt Miller took the penalty and finished top right to put the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
Late in the second half, Keem stepped up again with a ball coming in from
Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) on the left wing. Keem was able to seal off multiple Molloy defenders inside the box before he took a touch across the box and finished on the right side for the game-winning goal. This marked Keem's third career game-winning goal and his third career multi-goal game. His last two-goal game came in the 2017 season finale, a 3-2 road win over Molloy. The Wildcats move to 6-2 in the last two seasons when Keem scores at least one goal.
Molloy was able to rattle off 17 shots, including five on goal, and the Wildcats had 11 shots with only three on goal. Schmidt made four saves in the game, picking up his third win of the season between the pipes.
The Wildcats look to build on its two-game winning streak when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Lock Haven University on Tuesday, September 18.
