Wildcat Winning Streak Ends At Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Three unanswered goals in the second half proved costly as the Daemen College men's soccer team saw its modest two-game winning streak come to an end today with a 3-1 loss to Lock Haven University in non-conference action at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Daemen, which was coming off victories over Gannon University (3-2) and Molloy College (2-1), suffered its first defeat since a 3-2 double overtime decision at Le Moyne College on September 8, dropping their overall record to 3-3. Lock Haven, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, picked up their third straight victory to improve to 4-2-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats struck first as sophomore midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) notched his second goal of the season at the 54:53 mark. Cupello dribbled from the left sideline into the middle of the field and launched an indefensible shot to the high right corner of the goal from approximately 20 yards out. The tally snapped a nearly 300-minute goalless streak for the LHU defense which dated back three games.

The Bald Eagles came back with the equalizer 10 minutes later as Andrew Moore headed home a crossing feed from Beckham Sibiski at the 64:34 mark. Just over four minutes later, at the 68:43 mark, Sibiski got on the scoresheet and put LHU ahead with his one-timer off a feed from Matt McDermott.

With Daemen pushing forward to try to equalize late in the game, a turnover led to a two-on-one situation for LHU and Brian Flatter found Sibiski who one-timed another shot to the back of the net, this one at the 84:58 mark which essentially sealed the deal.

Lock Haven attempted nine shots in both periods, outshooting Daemen 18-8 in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany), the reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, made five saves in a losing effort for the Wildcats, evening his goalkeeping record at 3-3 this season. His counterpart, Camden Cook, made six saves while picking up his fourth win of the season.

Daemen returns to ECC play when they host longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College this Saturday, September 22 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Karrer Field. The Wildcats are looking to start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since joining the league back in 2013, and they're looking for their second straight win in the Thruway Rivalry series with RWC after knocking off the Redhawks 2-1 in overtime last season.
