Men's Soccer Edges Out Win Against Roberts Wesleyan

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team ground out a 1-0 home win against Roberts Wesleyan College in an East Coast Conference game at Karrer Field today.

The win pushes the Wildcats' record to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. It marks the first time in team history that the Wildcats have won two straight conference contests to start a season. Roberts Wesleyan dropped to 2-3-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference with today's loss.

It was also Daemen's second straight victory in the series with the rival Redhawks after a 2-1 overtime win in Rochester last season.

Both teams traded possession in the first half today. Roberts Wesleyan rattled off six shots compared to Daemen's four in the first 45. Freshman goalkeeper Philipp Schmidt (Lahr, Germany) recorded three saves in the first half and four total for the game.

The main chance for both teams in the first half came off a shot from junior midfielder Terrell Spencer of the Redhawks in the seventh minute. Spencer received the ball in the box and put in a high shot on goal that was touched over the crossbar by Schmidt leading to a corner kick. Spencer ranks third in the ECC in goals this season with five.

There was a total of 31 fouls between both teams with 16 on Roberts Wesleyan and 15 on Daemen. Three yellow cards given with Pascal Kuhn (Emmendingen, Germany) of Daemen receiving one while Tariq Michael and Daniel Maxwell each received one for the Redhawks.

The most important foul for Daemen came when sophomore midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) began an attack down the right side around 20 yards outside of the box. A foul was given which left freshman defender Giacomo Bacigalupo (Lavagna, Italy) to take a free kick. The set piece proved to be the game-changer when he curled a ball inside the far post. The ball may have taken a deflection from the Redhawks, but it resulted in a Bacigalupo goal in the 56th minute. This was his second career goal, which have both come from set pieces.

The win for Daemen gives them a push in ECC play after being picked to finish ninth, two spots behind Molloy and one spot ahead of Roberts Wesleyan.

The Wildcats travel to Bloomsburg, Pa. to take on Bloomsburg University on Wednesday, September 26 at 1 p.m. for an out-of-conference matchup. Daemen will be looking for retribution after suffering a 5-4 loss to the Huskies last season in the teams' first-ever meeting.
