Custodi Paces Wildcats At West Regional Qualifier

LONGMONT, Colo. - Redshirt sophomore Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) placed fourth among all participants from NCAA Division II teams to lead the Daemen College women's triathlon team at the West Regional Qualifier today at Union Reservoir.

Custodi, who has already qualified for the 2018 Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championship by virtue of a fourth-place finish at last week's Central Regional Qualifier, came in 28th place overall today out of 49 competitors. She also placed 16th among all NCAA triathletes, completing the course in a time of 1:09:00.

Freshman Nicole Schmidt (Vienna, Va.) and redshirt sophomore Jordan Hardie (Attica, N.Y.) also competed for Daemen today. Schmidt placed 45th overall, 39th among all NCAA participants, and 12th among Division II participants with a time of 1:22:33. Hardie came in just behind, placing 46th overall, 40th among NCAA participants and 13th among Division II participants with a time of 1:23:44.

National powerhouse Arizona State University saw six of its triathletes placed in the top seven, including race winner Hannah Henry who posted a time of 1:00:42. Mathilde Bernard of Black Hills State University was the top Division II finisher, placing 14th overall with a time of 1:05:20.

The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 25 schools in the country (10 affiliated with NCAA Division II) to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.

The Wildcats return to competition on Saturday, October 20 at the EastRegional Qualifier in Huddleston, Va.
