In the last minute of the game, the Wildcats pressed forward for one last attack when freshman midfielder Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) received the ball in the midfield with no one around her. Stranahan played a through-ball which deflected off a Bears defender to the feet of Meyer. Meyer was able to poke the ball past NYIT goalkeeper Jessie Sabal, and the ball trickled into the net to put the Wildcats on top with just 39 seconds left in regulation. The win propels Daemen over the .500 mark for the season at 5-4, while also pushing their ECC record to 3-1. The Wildcats have shown a flare for the dramatic this season as all three of their conference wins have been by a single goal. They previously erased 2-0 deficits to defeat both Molloy College and Roberts Wesleyan College by identical 3-2 overtime finals. NYIT, which came into the game ranked ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II East Region poll, dropped to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in ECC play. Junior forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) put Daemen on the board first as she made a run between defenders where she received a pass from sophomore midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain). Boyar slotted a shot to the left of the keeper giving her 10 goals on the season. She becomes just the second player in team history to record double-digit goals in back-to-back seasons, joining Daemen Hall of Famer Kim Walker who did so in three straight seasons (2003, 2004, 2005). After going into halftime with the lead, the Wildcats struggled to control the game with the Bears consistently attacking. NYIT rattled off 15 shots in the second half compared to only four in the first half. With the Bears persistent in their offensive attack, a foul was whistled in the midfield on the Wildcats. Jess Hawley played a long ball off the free kick which landed right next to the goal at the feet of Meaghan Mancini, who scored her first goal of the season. That set the stage for Meyer's heroics late in the contest. The Daemen sophomore has now scored in back-to-back games for the first time in her career, and her three goals this season rank second on the team. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) made a season-high eight saves while picking up her third victory of the season. Boyar's first-half goal was the 27th of her career, one shy of third in team history. With her next tally, she'll tie Janelle Masi who notched 28 goals in her career which spanned from 2008-11. Boyar also moved into fifth all-time in points with 62 passing Lindsay Miller who totaled 61 in her four-year career, playing from 2008-11. The Wildcats are now in second place in the ECC standings behind only nationally-ranked Mercy College, which Daemen plays on Wednesday, October 3rd at 12 p.m. For the latest information on Daemen Athletics, follow the Wildcats via social media on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, or sign up to receive customizable news alerts, e-mail newsletters and weekly schedule alerts.
