Men's Tennis Falls To Regional Powerhouse Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Playing in their first dual match of the 2018-19 season, the Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Merrimack College in non-conference action at the North Andover High School Tennis Courts. Merrimack, which has made 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

The hosts opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches to establish a 1-0 lead. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

MC's Denis Davydov and Alex Fedorov scored a 6-2 win over DC's James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.) and Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) in the third doubles position. Daemen gave themselves a chance to earn the point when Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) took down Frank Vega and Tyler Clontz 6-4 in the first doubles position. It was an impressive showing for Daemen's top pair against a Merrimack duo that advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA East Region Championship tournament earlier this month.

Merrimack secured the point with a win at the No. 2 doubles position. Jonathan Garcia and Conrad Koch edged Daemen seniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) 7-6.

In singles play, Merrimack earned points in the first, second, third, fourth and sixth positions. Davydov downed Ruiz Martinez in a marathon match at the top of the lineup (6-2, 6-7, 1-0). Vega bested Gonzalez Villegas (6-1, 6-3), Garcia knocked off Wilde (6-3, 6-2), Alex MacKay Rodriguez took down Williamson III (6-3, 6-1) and Koch was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Milner.

Daemen's lone singles win came from freshman Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.) who downed Fedorov in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 1-0).

Daemen returns to action on Thursday, October 4 when they take on Division I Niagara on Monteagle Ridge.
