Boyar Nets 50th But Wildcats Fall At Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - Senior forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) netted the 50th goal of her career but it wasn't enough to lift the Daemen College women's soccer team past Molloy College in a key East Coast Conference meeting here tonight. The host Lions got a tally from Dana Poetzsch with less than nine minutes remaining to pull out a 2-1 victory, handing the Wildcats just their second loss of the season in the process.

Molloy improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in ECC play while earning their third consecutive win. The Lions leap-frogged both Daemen and idle New York Tech into second place in the ECC standings. Daemen, which remains the No. 9 ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches East Region poll, dropped to fourth in the league standings, falling to 8-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Molloy held and 8-2 edge in shot attempts in the opening period, but couldn't capitalize until it was almost too late. The Lions took advantage of a late corner kick opportunity when Lindsey McCarthy found the back of the net with just 3.9 seconds remaining in the half.
  • Daemen would get the equalizer at the 63:02 mark as Boyar pounced on a misplaced ball inside the Molloy box. She tapped the ball into a wide open net, becoming just the second player in program history to reach the 50-goal plateau in the process.
  • Poetzsch, who entered the game as the No. 2 goal-scorer in the country this season, capitalized on a similar play to put the hosts ahead at the 81:21 mark. A misplayed clearing attempt by the Daemen defense caromed into the box where Poetzsch got to it first and sent a shot past goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) who was racing off the goal line. It marked Poetzsch's 16th goal of the season.
  • Daemen generated four corner kicks in the waning minutes, resulting in several game-tying attempts, all of which went for naught. Molloy's Jackie Carty turned aside shots by Boyar and Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) with less than three minutes remaining to preserve the one-goal edge. Carty made five total saves in the contest.
  • Flores was credited with five saves for the Wildcats. She fell to 6-2-2 between the pipes for Daemen this season.

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen's last five games have been decided by just one goal and the Wildcats are 3-2-0 in those games.
  • The game featured two of the premier goal scorers in the country in Daemen's Boyar and Molloy's Poetzsch. Both entered the game among the top-10 scorers in the country. Boyar's goal was her 13th of the season. Poetzsch's goal pulls her into a tie with Bridgeport's Maegen Doyle for the ECC and national lead.
  • Boyar joins Kim Walker as the only players in program history to score 50 goals. Boyar, who has totaled 50 goals and 111 points in 62 career games, stands just four goals shy of Walker's program record of 54 set from 2003-06. Boyar is also third in the country for career goals scored among active NCAA Division II players.
  • The loss snapped Daemen's 14-game unbeaten streak when Boyar scores a goal. The Wildcats last loss when she scored came Sept. 8, 2018 against St. Thomas Aquinas. Daemen is 23-6-2 since the start of the 2016 season when Boyar scores.
