Tigers Prevail In The Battle Of The Cats

Salem Posts 3-1 Win Over Daemen In First-Ever Meeting Between the Two Programs

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Salem University scored twice in the final 26 minutes of action to earn a 3-1 victory over Daemen College here today in men's soccer action. Salem, a NCAA Division II independent, improved to 3-5-1 with the win. Daemen dropped to 0-8-0 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Salem opened the scoring just 6:45 into the contest when junior Mark Ferenczi-Bako intercepted a Daemen clearing attempt and one-time a shot into the upper left corner from 25 yards out.
  • The Tigers maintained the 1-0 lead until early in the second half when the Wildcats scored following a corner kick. Redshirt sophomore Ben Christidis (Fairport, N.Y.) headed the kick into the box, where sophomore Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) touched it past SU net minder Luis Ramirez from six yards out. It marked the first goal this season and the fourth career goal for Matthews. Christidis has now totaled a team-high two assists on the year.
  • Salem broke the 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute when Ferenczi-Bako netted his second of the game. His free kick from 25 yards out found the upper right corner.
  • Salem secured the win with just under five minutes left when sophomore Nicholas Booysen converted a penalty kick.
  • Salem posted a 12-3 edge in shots in the second half and finished with a 17-8 advantage overall.
  • Junior Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made six saves. Ramirez registered two saves for the Tigers.
     

GAME NOTES

  • The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
  • Daemen returns 11 players from last years team that finished 5-12-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the East Coast Conference. The Wildcats were picked eighth in the ECC preseason poll.
  • Salem posted a 9-8-2 record last year and was selected to play in the ECAC Division II championship game.
  • Daemen returns to action Saturday (Oct. 5) when it hosts the University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference match.
