Men's Tennis Falls To Defending Atlantic Region Champs

ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2018-19 schedule with a 7-0 loss to Mercyhurst University at the Westwood Racquet Club. Daemen, which went 0-2 in dual matches during the brief fall season, falls to 0-3 overall. Mercyhurst, the defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II Atlantic Region champions, moved to 1-0.

The highly-touted Lakers opened up a 1-0 lead in the match after securing multiple wins in doubles play. Cormac McCooey and Unai Amilleta Gonzalez scored a 6-0 win over Daemen's Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) in the No. 1 doubles position. MU's top duo is presently ranked fifth in the country. The Lakers also got a 6-0 win in the No. 2 doubles position from Arseniy Sklyarov and Ruairidh Fraser over DC's Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain).

As the match shifted to singles play, Mercyhurst extended their lead and eventually took all six remaining points. Ruiz Martinez was the lone Daemen player to extend his match to a third set, but he fell to McCooey, the No. 5 ranked singles player in the Atlantic Region, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

Fraser won 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles position over Wilde. Amilleta Gonzalez was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in the No. 3 position over Williamson III. Sebastian Pardo (6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 over Milner) and Felix Schmedding (6-0, 6-1 in No. 5 over DC's James Schaab-Rozbicki) also picked up singles wins.

Mercyhurst came into the match ranked second in the ITA Atlantic Region poll. Daemen's three dual-match losses this season have come against teams that combined to go 47-20 during the 2017-18 season.

Daemen returns to Erie for a meeting with Edinboro University next Friday, Feb. 15.
