Wildcats Fall To Fighting Scots

ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Edinboro University in a non-conference matchup tonight at the Westwood Racquet Club. Daemen dropped to 0-4, while Edinboro improved to 3-0. EU is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

Daemen's top doubles team of sophomore Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over EU's Julius Schulte and Kevin Mboko. The Fighting Scots took No. 2 doubles, as Tommy Hsu and Nils Plutat posted a 6-1 win over senior Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) and junior James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.). The hosts claimed the doubles point with a win by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.

EU took control of the match with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Mateus Santos posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Martinez at No. 1 singles, and Hsu claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Williamson at No. 2 singles. Wilde turned in a strong effort at No. 3 singles for Daemen, but suffered a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 loss to Mauricio Santos.

Daemen returns to action tomorrow (Feb. 16) with a non-league match at Walsh University.
