JUMP BALL
Regionally-ranked Daemen faces a tough test when it hosts Long Island University Post (Feb. 15) and New York Institute of Technology (Feb. 17) in key East Coast Conference games this weekend. Daemen enters the weekend in second place in the ECC standings and ranked ninth in the D2SIDA East Region poll. LIU Post was the preseason favorite to win the league, while NYIT is ranked eighth in the region and is just a half game behind Daemen in the league standings. Daemen's two league losses came to LIU Post (70-54) and NYIT (84-46) earlier this year on Long Island.
THE STREAK
Daemen's current nine game winning streak ranks as the program's longest winning streak since the Wildcats joined the ECC in 2013-14. The last time the Wildcats won nine in a row was midway through the 2010-11 season. Daemen and Bentley have both won nine-straight games, which ranks as the second longest streak among NCAA Division II East Region teams. Nationally-ranked University of the Sciences, which has won 12 in a row, is the only team in the region with a longer winning streak.
WILDCATS MOVE UP IN REGIONAL RANKINGS
Daemen has moved up one spot in the latest version of the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region media poll. Daemen, which made its first-ever appearance in the poll last week, is ranked ninth this week. The East Region of NCAA Division II is comprised of teams from the East Coast Conference, the Northeast-10 Conference and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and the East Region media poll is voted on by sports information professionals from around the region.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Daemen can secure a spot in the upcoming ECC Championship Tournament with a win this weekend. The ECC Championship features the top six teams in the final league standings, with first round games slated for campus sites on Wednesday, March 6. The semifinals (Saturday, March 9) and finals (Sunday, March 10) will be played at Hubbell Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Bridgeport. Daemen made its first-ever appearance in the six-team tournament last year.
MORE GOOD NEWS
Daemen's 10 league wins are the most the Wildcats have posted since joining the league in 2013-14. The previous best was nine set last year.
BATTLE TESTED
Daemen recently posted a 62-54 victory over regionally-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas. It marked the second time this season the Wildcats have knocked off a team that was regionally ranked by the Division II Sports Information Director's Association (D2SIDA) at the time of the game. Daemen has faced 10 teams that have been ranked regionally by the D2SIDA at some point this season.
BANKER RECORS MILESTONE WIN
Daemen's 79-47 win over District of Columbia on Jan. 27 marked the 100th win as a collegiate coach for Jenepher Banker. She is in her third season as head coach at Daemen and previously spent five seasons (1988-93) as head coach at Penn State Behrend. Her overall collegiate record currently stands at 103-101. Last year she led Daemen to its first-ever appearance in the ECC Championship Tournament. Banker arrived at Daemen with nearly 30 years of coaching experience at various levels, ranging from Division I to high school. Banker's 1991-92 team at Penn State Behrend went 23-4 and garnered Penn State-Behrend's first-ever national ranking in any sport. She was inducted into Penn State-Behrend's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Banker most recently coached at the high school level, guiding the varsity team at Grand Island High School from 1998-2013. She built the Lady Vikings into a regional contender with seven Section VI championships, four appearances in the Far West Regional, and one appearance at the New York State final four.
