Daemen Star Titus Finds Her Mission

ECC Rookie of the Year Makes Lasting Impact On Trip To Ecuador

AMHERST, N.Y. - Friends, road trips, parties and beaches - typical areas of amusement for young adults who have recently completed their first year of college studies. Perhaps not for Daemen College women's basketball star Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.). After a breakout freshman season that saw her earn East Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors, Titus has spent the last two weeks making a lasting impact on a mission trip to Ecuador - an impact on the school she's volunteered at, and the kids she's worked with, but also in her own personal development.

10866Arriving each day by 8 a.m., Titus has worked with children for several hours at a school in Cuenca, a city in southern Ecuador's Andes Mountains. Many of the children, whose ages range from newborn to five, come from impoverished families, and Titus is there to assist in teaching them basic English-speaking skills like numbers, colors and animals.

After initially coming to Daemen as a Physical Therapy major, Titus changed to Childhood/Special Education prior to the Spring 2019 semester. That decision seems to only be fortified by the experience she's had out-of-country.

"I've been able to make so many connections and use what I have learned at Daemen to bring my education to life," Titus relayed in an email. "Getting to know these children has already hands down been the most humbling experience ever. Many of the niños do not have the best home life, yet every single one of them come with the biggest smiles of their faces every day. They are the most loving and accepting people I've ever met, and I'm honored that I get to spend time with them. I am sad that I will have to leave them so soon, but I'm also hopeful that we've left a good impression and taught them the importance of a continued education."

Titus' impact will be felt long after the duration of her short trip. She and a traveling companion lobbied school officials to allow them to paint over an outdated mural at the front of the building. Their creative artwork will remain in place for years to come.
