The Wildcats sent four triathletes into competition today, including three who made their collegiate debuts; all four placed among the top 50 finishers. Merrill posted an overall time of 1:12:30.3. She was particularly strong in the running portion of the race, completing the 5K in 20:55.3 which ranked 14th overall and second among Division II entrants. Freshman Caitlyn Yap (Kennesaw, Ga.) also made a strong debut, placing 32nd overall and sixth among Division II participants with a time of 1:13:11.2. Yap's strongest portion was the 750-meter open water swim in Lake Andrea which she completed in 11:59.9, ranking fifth in her division. Redshirt junior Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 1:14:09.8, good for 34th place overall and eighth among Division II participants. Custodi ranked fourth in the division for the 19-kilometer cycling portion which she completed in 35:37.7. Freshman Keagan Carroll (Woodbridge, Va.) also debuted for the Wildcats today, placing 48th overall and 10th in the Division II standings with a time of 1:19:03.4. HEAD COACH JON METZ'S POST-RACE COMMENTS "It was a solid season opener with great performances by our freshmen. We are looking forward to a full month of racing as we continue to build and develop our young talent." RACE NOTES The competition featured athletes from 12 different schools representing all three NCAA divisions. Six of the top 10 overall finishers hailed from Arizona State University which claimed first place among competing Division I teams; ASU's Kyla Roy claimed first-place honors individually with a time of 1:00:44.6 Drury University edged Daemen for first-place honors among Division II teams; the Panthers featured the top four Division II finishers, all of whom placed in the top 30 overall; Drury's Jayme-Sue Vermaas posted the top Division II time (1:05:11.1). Today's race is one of three regional qualifying events during the NCAA women's triathlon season By placing second in their division today, Daemen has officially qualified for the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships which are slated for Nov. 16 in Tempe, Arizona Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
