STERLING, Ohio - The Daemen College women's triathlon team will head into the latter stages of their fall season on a high note after putting on an impressive display at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge this morning. Redshirt junior Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) and freshman Courtney Merrill (Speedway, Ind.) placed first in their respective age groups, while freshmen Caitlyn Yap (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Keagan Carroll (Woodbridge, Va.) had strong showings as well. Custodi was the top finisher among females in the 20-24 age group, crossing the finish line in 1:14:24.62. It marked her second solid performance in as many appearances at this event. She was the top overall female finisher here in 2017. Merrill placed first in the 15-19 age group for females. It marks her second such finish this season after placing first in the same age group at the Finger Lakes Triathlon on Sept. 8. She completed the course in 1:16:26.45. Merrill was followed closely by her teammates Yap and Carroll who placed second and third, respectively, in the 15-19 age group. Yap posted a time of 1:23:04.74, and Carroll crossed the finish line in 1:26:18.54. "Today's race ends a busy month of racing and training," said Daemen head coach Jon Metz. "I am very pleased with the progress the team has made in a short period of time. Now it is time to regroup and focus on the national championship." The Wildcats are now idle until the Collegiate Triathlon National Championships which are slated for Saturday, Nov. 16 in Tempe, Arizona. Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
