Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener To Malone

Pioneers Tally Late Goal To Spoil Swan's Coaching Debut

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 2-1 loss to Malone University here today in a non-conference match. It was also the 2019 season-opener for Malone. The game also marked the debut of Bediako Swan, who became the sixth head coach in the history of the Daemen men's soccer program this past February.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Malone broke a 1-1 tie with 8:39 left in regulation time following a goal by sophomore Patrick Alvarez. Junior Patrick Brightbill assisted on the game-winner. 
  • The visiting Pioneers outshot the Wildcats 10-3 during a scoreless first half. Malone broke the stalemate in the 62nd minute when Brightbill scored off a feed from senior Jake Martell.
  • Daemen evened the score just 1:23 later when sophomore midfielder Pontus Lundin (Asmundtrop, Sweden) converted a penalty kick. It marked the the first career goal for Lundin, who started 15 of a possible 17 games as a rookie last year.
  • Daemen's best chance to force overtime came with 3:27 to play, but a shot by sophomore back Hilario Munoz was blocked by a Malone defender.
  • Junior Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made seven saves--one shy of his career high for saves in a game.


HEAD COACH BEDIAKO SWAN'S POST-GAME COMMENTS

"We have a lot of new players and we are still trying to gel. There are things to work on, but I saw enough positive things today to make me excited for the rest of the season."


GAME NOTES
  • Daemen returns 11 players from last years team that finished 5-12-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the East Coast Conference. The Wildcats were picked eighth in the ECC preseason poll.
  • Daemen's starting lineup today featured six newcomers.
  • Malone posted a 6-10-1 record last year and was voted 10th in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference preseason poll.
  • Daemen and Malone are both former members of the American Mideast Conference, the NAIA-affiliated league Daemen was associated with from the early 2000's through 2012.
  • The teams met for the first time since 2010 last fall, and the Wildcats posted a 1-0 victory at Malone.
  • Daemen returns to action Saturday (Sept.7) when it hosts Walsh University in a non-conference tilt.
