AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team couldn't make an early second half goal stand up as visiting Walsh University scored goals late in regulation and the first overtime period to escape Karrer Field with a 2-1 win in non-conference play today. With the loss, Daemen drops to 0-2 on the season. Walsh, a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, improves to 2-0 while taking a dramatic sweep of their tour through Western New York. The Cavaliers defeated Roberts Wesleyan College in a 3-2 double-overtime decision in Rochester earlier this week.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The teams played to a draw in the opening 45 minutes, but the half was plagued by fouls and bookings from the center referee. Walsh's Eirik Bomann was sent off with a red card in the 36th minute, forcing the Cavaliers to play a man down for the rest of the contest.
- Daemen broke the scoreless tie when sophomore defender Pontus Lundin (Asmundtorp, Sweden) converted his second penalty kick in as many games. The penalty was awarded after junior forward Derek Mancuso (Friendship, N.Y.) was hauled down in the box.
- Daemen kept their one-goal advantage for 35 minutes, but Dwight Van Dyke's goal at the 86:27 mark evened things up and set the game on course for overtime.
- Walsh outshot Daemen 6-1 in the overtime period, and claimed the win when Nathan Kett found the back of the net at the 99:40 mark, just 20 seconds before the period would have expired.
- Ethan Burawa went the distance in goal for Walsh, making seven saves in the victory.
- The loss spoiled a tremendous effort by Daemen goalkeeper Eithan Hanh (Lancaster, N.Y.) who made eight stops.
