ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Daemen College made a season-high 15 three-pointers en route to a 93-73 victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan College here today in East Coast Conference men's basketball action. The Wildcats picked up their fourth-straight win and improved to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in ECC play. The host Redhawks dropped to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in the league. The Wildcats remained in third place in the ECC standings.
Daemen, which posted its 19th consecutive win over Roberts Wesleyan, continued to break out offensively. The Wildcats scored 90 or more points for the third-straight game—something they had not done since the middle of the 2015-16 season.
Redshirt senior Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y.) led a balanced attack today and in the process etched his name in the Daemen record book. Redband went 7-for-11 from three-point land and finished with a game-high 23 points. The seven three-pointers equaled his career-high he established two times previously, most recently during an 83-57 win over the University of the Sciences this past November. He went 5-for-5 from behind the arc and netted 17 points in the second half. Redband, who has now totaled a league-high 74 three-pointers, entered today's game six three-pointers shy replacing Brian Montanaro (2002-06) as the program's leader in career three-point field goals made. Redband has now totaled 290 three-pointers in 111 career games.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Redband was one of four Daemen starters that finished in double digits in points.
- Redshirt senior Joey Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 13 points in the first half and finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. He came just two points shy of equaling his season-high for points.
- Redshirt junior Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) added 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. It marked the 16th double-double of the year for Sischo, which ties him with Sekou Sylla of The College of Saint Rose for the most among all NCAA Division II players.
- Senior Breon Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored 13 points in the first half and finished with 15 points and three assists. Redshirt senior Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in eight points and seven assists.
- Redshirt freshman Amari Lee and junior Armon Nasseri paced a balanced RWC attack with 16 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Daemen opened the game with three unanswered three-pointers and later took a 22-4 lead following a triple by Redband with 13:10 left in the first half. RWC answered with a conventional three-point play by junior Reggie Clark, but Daemen countered with seven unanswered points and later took a 35-9 lead following a dunk by Sischo with 8:17 left before intermission. The Wildcats took their largest lead of the first half (40-11) with just over seven minutes left in the frame, but Daemen went scoreless for the next two minutes and managed just seven points the rest of the half. The host Redhawks took advantage and cut the lead to 17 points (47-30) at the break.
- Daemen appeared ready to regain control of the game after two free throws by Sischo gave the Wildcats a 57-32 lead less than three minutes into the second half, but RWC refused to go away and put together a 14-2 run that cut the lead to 13 points (59-46) with 14:40 left. The Daemen lead was down to eight points (67-59) with nine minutes to play when Redband's fifth three-pointer ignited a decisive 18-4 run by the Wildcats. A dunk by Wallace with 2:54 left capped the run and gave the visitors an 85-63 lead. The run featured Redband's record-breaking three-pointer, which came with 4:01 left to play and gave Daemen an 81-63 lead.
- Daemen made 31-of-69 field goals and went 15-of-33 from three-point land. The visitors also made 16-of-21 free throws. RWC went 26-of-57 from the field overall, but made just 8-of-25 from behind the arc. The hosts went an efficient 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.
- Daemen held a sizable advantage in both points off turnovers (23-7) and second chance points (16-2), while the Redhawks finished with a 32-28 advantage in points in the paint.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen is ranked fourth in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region media poll.
- Daemen's 19-game winning streak against Roberts Wesleyan ranks as its longest vs. any singular opponent, and one of three that have reached double digits (also 14 straight wins vs. Mercy College and 16 straight wins vs. Houghton College). Today's result marked Daemen's sixth win during the streak by 20 points or more. Roberts Wesleyan's last win over Daemen came on Feb. 15, 2011 (73-54). Daemen has won 26 of the last 27 meetings.Â
- The win was Daemen's 47th-straight when reaching the 90-point plateau. Since the start of the 2009-10 season, Daemen is 77-2 when scoring 90+ points. Their last loss when scoring in the 90's came January 7, 2014 at Dominican College (98-93, overtime).
- Daemen's starters combined for 85 points—the fifth time this season they've gone for 80 or more. Daemen's starters accounted for a season-high 88 points in a win over Molloy on Jan. 24.Â
- Daemen entered the game leading the ECC in three-pointers made per game (9.2). They've now made at least 10 three-pointers in three-straight and 11 total games this season.Â
- Redband, who leads the ECC with 74 three-pointers this season, has made at least one triple in 53 of the last 57 games, and today's output marked the 20th game of his career with at least five trifectas.
- Redband also recorded his 1,300th career point today and also moved into the Top-10 in career points among Daemen's all-time leaders. He ranks 11th with 1,319 points.
- Sischo recorded his 800th career rebound today and moved closer to becoming the sixth player in program history to score 1,600 points. He has totaled 1,589 points and 803 rebounds in 80 career games. He ranks sixth in career points and fifth in career rebounds among Daemen's all-time leaders.
- Wallace scored his 1,000th career point today. Wallace, who played three full seasons at Southern Connecticut State University before transferring to Daemen, has totaled 1,008 points in 107 career games. He has scored 252 points in a 22 games with Daemen.
- Sarkis now stands 21 points shy of 1,000 for his career. He has also registered 308 assists and is bidding to become just the fifth player in team history with 1,000 points and 300 assists.
