BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – After a five-goal shutout effort this past Wednesday in non-conference play against Chestnut Hill, Daemen men's soccer hoped to use this momentum when they returned to East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon to kick off the home stretch of the 2021 campaign against Bridgeport.
Unfortunately, this was not the case.
Behind goals from a pair of midfielders, senior Hannes Nilsson and freshman Lucas Sousa, the Purple Knights secured a 2-0 victory over the visiting Wildcats in a contest held at Knights Field.
With the loss, Daemen men's soccer drops to 3-8-0 overall and 1-5-0 in East Coast Conference play, Daemen has now lost five straight contests in ECC play since a 4-1 victory at D'Youville on Sept. 18 and are 1-5 in their last six contests.
With the victory, Bridgeport improves to 4-6-2 overall and 4-2-0 in ECC play. Today's result helped the Purple Knights avoid their fourth consecutive loss. Bridgeport entered the day holding sole possession of fourth place in the East Coast Conference standings.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Hannes Nilsson gave Bridgeport the 1-0 lead when he connected off freshman forward John Louis' pass to the middle of the box with a solid boot underneath Lerma Escobar in the 28th minute. This marked Nilsson's third goal of the season. The score would remain in advantage of the Purple Knights, 1-0, at the halftime break.
- This remained a one-goal contest until the 65th minute when junior midfielder Chigozie Okorie connected with freshman midfielder Lucas Sousa, who buried the shot into the back of the net to give Bridgeport the eventual 2-0 victory.
- Bridgeport outshot Daemen, 17-6, and recorded eight shots on goal. The Purple Knights also out-edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 7-2.
- Junior forward Christian Lewin (Bobenheim-Roxheim, Germany) recorded Daemen's lone shot on goal in the 31st minute of regulation time. This is the fourth time this season the Wildcats have recorded one shot on goal or fewer in a contest.
- Senior goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) recorded six saves for the Wildcats. Today marked the veteran's 10th start of the season (13th of career) and had started the Wildcats' first nine contests in 2021. Lerma Escobar entered the day coming off the first shutout performance of his Daemen career in a 5-0 victory over Chestnut Hill on Oct. 13.
GAME NOTES
- Today marked the eighth all-time meeting between Daemen and Bridgeport. The Purple Knights now lead the all-time series, 8-0-0, with four wins recorded as the home team.
- For the fifth time in their last six games, Daemen was held scoreless in the first half. Since their Sept. 18 victory against D'Youville, Daemen has now been outscored by their opponents, 15-6, including five shutouts, during this stretch.
- Daemen is now 0-6-0 on the season when not scoring first in a contest. However, the Wildcats are 3-2-0 overall when finding the back of the net first in 2021.
- Daemen had entered the afternoon coming off a 5-0 victory over Chestnut Hill in non-conference play on Oct. 13 at Karrer Field. The five-goal performance marked Daemen's best offensive game since a 6-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown during the 2017 season and the third time the Wildcats scored at least five goals in a contest in the program's NCAA Division II era (2015-present.) This win over the Griffins was Daemen's first shutout win since a 2-0 edging over D'Youville on April 30, 2021, which concluded their unorthodox 2020 season.
- Today marked the 11th of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
