Behind a two-goal performance from redshirt junior Sergio Del Castillo late in the second half, the Golden Knights secured a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats in a contest held at Williamsville South High School Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, Daemen men's soccer drops to 3-9-0 overall and have now lost consecutive matches dating to Saturday's 2-0 loss at Bridgeport. Daemen is also 1-7 in their last eight contests. With the victory, Gannon improves to 11-1-1 overall on the 2021 campaign. The Golden Knights entered today's contest ranked No. 18 on the in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll released on Oct. 19. HIGHLIGHTS For the second time in their last three contests, Daemen got on the scoreboard first. In the fourth minute, senior midfielder Arthur Djengue Bille (Paris, France) took a feed from defender Hilario Muñoz (Málaga, Spain) and created separation on the far sideline before launching a hard shot to the upper right corner of the goal from 25 yards out, giving Daemen a 1-0 lead. It was his first goal of the season. The Golden Knights responded in the 13th minute when senior midfielder Bek Nurlanbek scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1. Despite opportunities from both teams, the score would remain 1-1 at the halftime break. This remained a tied contest until Del Castillo took over for the Golden Knights. The veteran midfielder scored the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Herman Aanberg to give the visiting Gannon team a 2-1 lead. Del Castillo then put the exclamation point on the contest roughly 10 minutes later (64th minute) off a nice feed from Nurlanbek for the eventual 3-1 final score. Del Castillo has now scored eight goals this season for the Golden Knights. Gannon outshot Daemen, 16-11, and recorded nine shots on goal. The Purple Knights also out-edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 4-0. Daemen recorded seven shots on goal in the contest, tying a season-high mark in a single contest this season (7 versus Molloy, Oct. 2, 2021.) Veteran midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a team-high three shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) recorded six saves for the Wildcats in the loss. Today marked the veteran's 11th start of the season (14th of career) and had started the Wildcats' first nine contests in 2021. GAME NOTES Today marked the eighth all-time meeting between Daemen and Gannon. The Golden Knights now lead the all-time series, 6-2-0. This was the first meeting between the programs since Gannon's 2-1 victory in Erie, Pa. on March 21, 2021 – part of an abbreviated and unorthodox season for both programs due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Daemen still searches for their first win in the rivalry since a 3-2 victory at Williamsville South High School on Sept. 10, 2018. Since their Sept. 18 victory against D'Youville, Daemen has now been outscored by their opponents, 20-7, including five shutouts, during this stretch. Counting the goal scored by Djengue Bille in the fourth minute, Daemen is now 3-3-0 when scoring first in a contest this season. However, the Wildcats are 0-6-0 when allowing the first goal. Daemen had hoped for more success as the home team after their 5-0 victory over Chestnut Hill in non-conference play last Wednesday (Oct. 13) at Karrer Field. The five-goal performance marked Daemen's best offensive game since a 6-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown during the 2017 season and the third time the Wildcats scored at least five goals in a contest in the program's NCAA Division II era (2015-present.) This win over the Griffins was Daemen's first shutout win since a 2-0 edging over D'Youville on April 30, 2021, which concluded their unorthodox 2020 season. Today marked the 12th of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6. ON THE HORIZON Daemen continues their 2021 campaign when they host the College of Staten Island Dolphins in an East Coast Conference matchup on Saturday, October 23 at 11 a.m. at Karrer Field in Amherst, N.Y. This is one of two home contests remaining for Daemen men's soccer this season.
