Women’s Soccer Second-Half Rally At Bridgeport Ends In 2-2 Draw

Daemen only remaining unbeaten team in ECC play following Mercy loss

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – While their unblemished record in East Coast Conference play is now off the board, Daemen women's soccer has plenty of reasons to keep their heads high before waiting a whole week before returning to game action.

After falling behind 2-0 – with the second goal clocking in at just 37 seconds into the second half – the Wildcats forced extra time with late scores from Alyssa Diaz (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and veteran midfielder Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) in what resulted as a 2-2 draw with Bridgeport Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.

Despite the draw, Daemen women's soccer now stands as the only remaining unbeaten team in East Coast Conference play at 5-0-1 (6-4-1 overall) after Mercy's 1-0 loss at Molloy earlier this afternoon.

Daemen's match with Bridgeport was the first contest to end in a tie for the program since a scoreless finish with rival Roberts Wesleyan on Oct. 26, 2019 (721 days.) That was the third and final contest to end in a draw that season.

Bridgeport, meanwhile, now stands at 6-6-1 overall (1-3-1 ECC.)

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bridgeport struck gold first in the eighth minute when junior forward Leigh-Ann Ramsey scored her second goal of the season off an assist from freshman forward Kate Thill for the 1-0 lead. While Daemen had some opportunities to counter, including a shot from Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) that sailed just over the cross-bar in the 25th minute, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the host Purple Knights at the halftime break.
  • The Purple Knights extended their lead just 37 seconds into the second half when sophomore defender Evelyn Hammer scored after finding an open lane down the middle of the field for the 2-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Angelina LoFranco was credited with the assist.
  • Daemen soon found some life on the offensive side of the field when Diaz connected from Hanes in the 54th minute, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1. This was Diaz's fourth goal of the season.
  • Daemen then found the back of the net in the 79th minute of regulation. On a sequence that started with a long pass from Scalisi, Diaz sprinted down the field and beat her defender to find Hanes within striking distance to tie the score at 2-2 and force extended time.
  • Bridgeport outshot Daemen, 20-11, including 10 shots on goal. The Purple Knights also out-edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 5-1.
  • Daemen had five shots on goal in today's draw. Including her goal, Diaz finished with a team-high three shots on goal. Hanes, with her late goal, and senior midfielder Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) contributed one shot on goal apiece.
  • Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) recorded eight saves in the draw. This marked DeLappi's 11th start of the season and the 14th of her Wildcat career.

GAME NOTES
  • Today marked the ninth all-time meeting between Daemen and Bridgeport. The Purple Knights now lead the all-time series, 7-1-1. UB is also 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.
  • By scoring in the 54th minute, Diaz scored her fourth goal of the season. Diaz now stands with 12 points on the season and joins Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Faye Panagopoulos (Kenmore, N.Y.) to reach double-digits in total points. With the four goals, Diaz is now tied with current teammate Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) plus former players Celina de Pablo Esteban (2017) and Alyssa Mercado (2019) for the second most goals scored by a freshman in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.) The program's all-time scorer, Jamie Boyar, scored a program-best six goals in her freshman campaign in 2016.
  • Today was the 59th career appearance and 58th career start for Hanes. Today was her first three-point outing since her one-goal, one-assist performance in a 3-1 victory versus Goldey-Beacom on Sept. 14, 2019. Hanes has now recorded seven goals and seven assists (21 total points) while wearing the blue-and-white.
  • With the secondary assist today on Hanes' late goal, Scalisi has now totaled a team-high 15 points and has recorded at least one point in five of the last seven games.
  • Since Stranahan scored in the second half of a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15, Daemen has now outscored their opponents, 25-8.
  • Today was Daemen's first contest since a 2-1 victory versus ECC opponent St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 9. Daemen was then set to host Le Moyne this past Wednesday (Oct. 13) to conclude a season-high five-game homestand before the game was postponed. The two teams are working together to find a mutually agreeable date to reschedule this contest.
  • Today was the fifth time this season Daemen has allowed two or more goals in a contest this season (0-4-1.) This has happened in two of Daemen's last three games (2-1 loss versus Stonehill on Oct. 7.)
  • Including today's contest, Daemen is now 1-4-1 this season when not recording the first goal. The lone win came against then nationally-ranked Molloy, 3-1, on Oct. 2. Five of Daemen's six wins to date have come after scoring first.
  • Daemen has now netted 27 goals from 12 different players and 13 players have recorded at least one point (team total of 76.)
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • This marked the 11th of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
