Scalisi Scores Twice As Women’s Soccer Defeats Staten Island, 3-0

Daemen moves to 6-0-1 in ECC play with two conference games left

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Heading into this cool, crisp weekend in late October, Daemen women's soccer already knew they had clinched a spot in next month's East Coast Conference tournament thanks to Mercy's victory over Queens on Oct. 22. This was one of many goals the group wanted to accomplish in the 2021 campaign when training camp began in late August.

The next mission to complete? Remaining unbeaten in East Coast Conference play with the reward of serving as the No. 1 seed in the tournament. And after today's contest hosting College of Staten Island (CSI), the "magic number" to accomplish this is down to two games.

Behind a two-goal, four-point outing from junior play-maker Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.), a goal from sophomore forward Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) and assists from veteran midfielders Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.), the Wildcats defeated the visiting Dolphins, 3-0, Saturday afternoon on the campus of Williamsville South High School in Williamsville, N.Y.

With the victory, Daemen women's soccer moves to 6-0-1 in ECC play (7-4-1 overall) and are 6-1-1 in their last eight contests.

CSI, meanwhile, now stands at 3-11-1 overall (2-4-1 ECC.)

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Controlling the pace of the game from the start, the Daemen offense spent little time finding the back of the net. In the 14th minute, Scalisi scored on her alma mater's home turf, putting the Wildcats on the scoreboard first. Despite more scoring opportunities that were on the table for the Wildcats, the score remained 1-0 at the half.
  • Daemen put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals in a 79-second span. At the 54:12 mark, off a pass from Stranahan in the left corner, Scalisi created separation from the CSI defender with some fancy footwork and fired a shot into the right corner of the net to give Daemen a 2-0 lead.
  • Then, at the 55:31 mark, with traffic in front of the net, Hanes sent a pass just beyond the reach of the CSI backline and found Amato for the goal, extending Daemen's lead to the eventual 3-0 final.
  • Daemen outshot CSI, 28-5, including 14 shots on goal. This was the second time this season where Daemen recorded 20 or more overall shots in a contest (3-1 win at D'Youville on Sept. 18.) The Wildcats also out-edged the Dolphins in corner kicks, 5-1.
  • Scalisi led Daemen with a team-high five shots on goal in the victory, followed closely behind by Amato, who tallied four shots. Reigning ECC Rookie of the Week winner Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) along with Baylin Tighe (Tonwanda, N.Y.), Katelyn Sidoti  (Rochester, N.Y.) and Lauren Cuisia (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded one shot on goal apiece
  • Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) recorded three saves in the victory. This marked 12th start of the season and the 15th of her Wildcat career.

GAME NOTES
  • Today marked the inaugural meeting between Daemen and Staten Island. The Dolphins are in their first official year as a member of the East Coast Conference in what is their third and final provisionary period. The Dolphins saw their 2020 season cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Today was Daemen's first contest since a 2-2 draw on the road at ECC opponent Bridgeport on Oct. 16.  Daemen's match with Bridgeport was the first contest to end in a tie for the program since a scoreless finish with rival Roberts Wesleyan on Oct. 26, 2019 (721 days.) That was the third and final contest to end in a draw that season.
  • Today was the second multi-goal performance for Scalisi this season and her first since a three-goal outing in Daemen's 9-0 win over Lincoln on Sept. 26. After finishing third on the team with two points in the unorthodox 2020 season, Scalisi has now totaled a team-high 19 points and has recorded at least one point in six of the last eight games. Daemen is now 4-0 this season when Scalisi scores at least once.
  • By scoring in the 56th minute, Amato scored her fourth goal of the season in her sixth appearance of 2021. The goal tied the mark she set as a freshman in the unorthodox season. Through just 10 games of her Wildcat career, Amato has now recorded eight goals and 17 total points.
  • The reigning ECC Offensive Player of the Week following a three-point outing at Bridgeport last Saturday, Hanes recorded her eighth career assist and 22nd overall career point on Amato's goal. Today was also the 60th career appearance and 59th career start for Hanes during her time wearing the blue-and-white.
  • Stranahan's assist on Scalisi's second goal was her first point since her three-point outing (one goal, one assist) in Daemen's 4-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Sept. 29. In 48 career appearances, Stranahan has totaled 10 goals and 18 assists (28 career points.)
  • Since Stranahan scored in the second half of a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15, Daemen has now outscored their opponents, 28-8.
  • Daemen is now 6-0-0 after scoring first in a contest this season.
  • Daemen has now netted 30 goals from 12 different players and 13 players have recorded at least one point (team total of 84.)
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • The ECC Championship will feature the top four teams in the final league standings. The tournament semifinals will take place on Thursday, November 11 in games hosted by the No. 1 and 2 seeds. The highest seed remaining will host the tournament final on Sunday, November 14. Daemen will be making its second conference tournament appearance since gaining full NCAA Division II membership in 2015.
  • Today marked the 12th of a 15-game schedule which runs through November 6.

ON THE HORIZON
