Women's Volleyball Winning Streak Halted At Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen women's volleyball team saw their longest winning streak of the season come to an end following a 3-1 loss (25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 16-25) to perennial contender Gannon in a non-conference match at the historic Hammermill Center this evening.

Daemen, which entered the match as winners of six straight and nine of their last 10, dropped its first match since a 3-1 setback to Southern Connecticut State on September 26. The Wildcats' record stands at 13-7 this season.

On the other side, Gannon picked up its fourth straight win, improving to 19-4. The Golden Knights, members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, have been to the last 11 NCAA tournaments and are presently receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II national poll. Gannon has won 14 straight meetings with the Wildcats.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Gannon was led tonight by the quartet of Lauren Sampson (14 kills), Sam Deinek (14 kills), Maggie Greenfield (eight kills) and Ashley McClung (eight kills) who combined for 44 of the team's 47 kills. Sampson, Greenfield and Ashley Kerestes chipped in five blocks apiece.
  • Setter Ashley Beyers totaled a match-high 35 assists, and Katie Becht led the Gannon defense with 22 digs.
  • Senior outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) continued to produce offensively for the Wildcats as she shared match-high honors with 14 kills. Logan added a career-high 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and the 11th of her career.
  • Also on the pin, junior Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) contributed 11 kills without committing a hitting error (.478 hitting percentage), and added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.
  • Sophomore Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) recorded 33 assists, while classmate Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) added a match-high 26 digs to her East Coast Conference-leading season total (311).

TURNING POINT
After Daemen attacked at a .357 clip (14 kills, three errors) and took a four-point win in the opening set, Gannon's presence at the net started to greatly impact the match. The Golden Knights recorded 12 blocks in the match (five solo blocks, 14 block assists) - all in the second, third and fourth sets. It marks the second-most blocks by a Daemen opponent this season. The Wildcats are just 1-6 when allowing eight or more blocks.

The Gannon defensive effort included 78 digs as they limited the Wildcats to a season-low .069 hitting percentage. The Golden Knights entered the match ranked seventh in the nation for opponents' hitting percentage (.110).

Still, Daemen built an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set as they attempted to even the match. That's when Gannon embarked on their signature run of the match, a 20-4 spurt that put to bed any thoughts of a fifth set. Sampson recorded five kills and Deinek had four in the run which included eight unanswered points, allowing Gannon to extend their 15-13 advantage to an insurmountable 23-13 edge.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats put their unblemished conference record (6-0) on the line Friday (Oct. 22) when they return to Lumsden Gymnasium to host Queens (N.Y.) for a 6 p.m. start.
