WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Coming off a
huge victory over Staten Island this past Saturday, Daemen women's soccer had the momentum and used it to their advantage in their final non-conference contest of the 2021 season.
Behind goals from sophomore forward
Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) and veteran forward
Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) and a one-save shutout from junior goalkeeper
Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio), Daemen women's soccer defeated Clarion, 2-1, on a rainy Tuesday evening on the campus of Williamsville South High School in Williamsville, N.Y.
With the victory, Daemen women's soccer moves to 8-4-1 overall (6-0-1 ECC play) and are 7-1-1 in their last eight contests. The Wildcats also received recognition on a national level prior to the contest's start. Daemen was ranked No. 10 in the latest
United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II East Region poll for a second consecutive week. Daemen is one of three East Coast Conference teams to place a spot on this week's rankings (Molloy at No. 3, Mercy at No. 9.)
Clarion, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, now stands at 4-9-1 overall in what was their lone non-conference contest of 2021.
HIGHLIGHTS
- In what was appearing to be a scoreless first half, Daemen got on the scoreboard first at the 39:44 mark when sophomore forward Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) received a pass from senior midfielder Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) for the Wildcats' 1-0 lead. Daemen is now 7-0-0 on the season when scoring first in a contest. This marked Amato's fifth goal of the season, establishing a single season high after scoring four as a freshman this past spring.
- Daemen maintained a 1-0 lead for the majority of the second half before Meyer received a pass from freshman defender Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) fired a right-foot shot from the left side of the field and hit the top of the right corner of the net to give Daemen a 2-0 lead at the 70:35 mark. This was Meyer's second goal of the season, her first since scoring in Daemen's victory over nationally-ranked Molloy on Oct. 2. Diaz recorded her fifth assist of the season (13 overall points), tying her with junior Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) for the most among Daemen players.
- Clarion did cut the deficit in half in the 78th minute when freshman forward Alayna Wicker scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to leave the Golden Eagles trailing, 2-1. Junior midfielder Annalise Eiswerth was credited with the assist.
- Daemen outshot Clarion, 27-4, including 15 shots on goal. This marked the third time this season Daemen recorded 20 or more shots in a contest and the second time in as many contests (28 shots versus Staten Island on Oct. 23.) Daemen also out-edged Clarion in corner kicks, 6-1.
- Amato, Stranahan, Diaz, Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) all recorded two shots on goal apiece as part of Daemen's team total of 15.
- The reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, DeLappi recorded one save in the shutout victory. Tonight marked her third shutout of the 2021 campaign and the 10th victory of her Wildcat career. DeLappi has now started all 13 contests in 2021 (16 in career.) Her counter-part, Alexandra Velez, recorded 13 saves, in the loss for the Golden Eagles.
GAME NOTES
- Today marked the fourth all-time meeting between Daemen and Clarion and the first meeting held in the '716' since a scoreless draw on Oct. 14, 2018 at Karrer Field in Amherst, N.Y. Daemen now leads the all-time series, 3-0-1.
- Tonight marked DeLappi's 10th career victory in net for the Wildcats. DeLappi previously won two contests as a freshman in the 2019 campaign. The reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, DeLappi now joins former teammate Maddie Flores (20 career wins) as the only goalkeepers to record 10+ wins for the Wildcats in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
- By scoring in the 71st minute in her 64th career appearance and 45th career start, Meyer recorded the ninth of her Daemen career. Meyer is now one goal away from becoming the fourth player in Daemen's NCAA era (2015 – present) from joining the "10 Goal Club" from her career (Grace Stranahan and Meghan Lipinoga, 10; Jamie Boyar, 55.)
- By scoring in the 40th minute, Amato scored her fifth goal of the season in her seventh appearance of 2021. The goal surpasses her four-goal mark she set as a freshman in the unorthodox season. Through just 11 games of her Wildcat career, Amato has now recorded nine goals (19 total points) and, like Meyer, is also one goal away from joining Daemen's "10 Goal Club" in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
- Stranahan's assist on Amato's goal marked the second consecutive game with an assist. In 49 career appearances, Stranahan has totaled 10 goals and 19 assists (29 career points.)
- Since Stranahan scored in the second half of a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15, Daemen has now outscored their opponents, 30-9.
- Daemen is now 7-0-0 after scoring first in a contest this season.
- Daemen has now netted 32 goals from 12 different players and 13 players have recorded at least one point (team total of 89.)
- Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
- Prior to their contest against Staten Island on Oct. 23, Daemen clinched a spot for the ECC Tournament after Mercy defeated Queens on Oct. 22. The ECC Championship will feature the top four teams in the final league standings. The tournament semifinals will take place on Thursday, November 11 in games hosted by the No. 1 and 2 seeds. The highest seed remaining will host the tournament final on Sunday, November 14. Daemen will be making its second conference tournament appearance since gaining full NCAA Division II membership in 2015.
- Today marked the 13th of a 15-game schedule which runs through November 6.
