ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College women's bowling team closed out play at the Mercyhurst Invitational today. The two-day event was hosted by Mercyhurst University and took place at Rolling Meadow Lanes. The tournament featured eight schools: Daemen, Mercyhurst, Duquesne University, Wilmington University (Del.), Medaille College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Penn State Behrend and D'Youville College.
The Wildcats ended up winning five of 10 matches over the two days and finished in fourth place with 8,859 total pins. Duquesne went 9-1 and placed first with 10,023 total pins. Wilmington placed second (9,545), while Medaille (8,913), Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan (8,807) rounded out the top five. Daemen's overall record now stands at 9-10 on the season.
Daemen took home the top individual honor, as junior Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Nowak, who also earned all-tournament honors at the Grapevine Classic hosted by Penn State Behrend two weeks ago, continued her solid start to the season. She rolled a 267 a loss to Mercyhurst during the opening day traditional matches, which ranked as the highest score among all bowlers during the opening round. She bowled over 200 in all five games yesterday and closed out the day with a tournament-high 227 average. Her tournament-best pin total of 1,135 was 73 pins better than that of Olivia Farwell of Duquesne who placed second with 1,062 pins. Nowak also posted a 224 in a win over Roberts Wesleyan and a 234 in a win over Medaille yesterday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Daemen entered day two in fourth place with 4,434 total pins. Duquesne (4,931) sat atop the day one standings, followed by Wilmington University (4,610) and host Mercyhurst (4,455).
- All of today's matches were scored using Baker Format.
- Daemen opened the day with a 973-939 loss to Wilmington. The Wildcats started the match with a 168-159 win in game one, but Wilmington answered with a 237-177 win in game two. Daemen got back in the match with a 211-200 win in game three and a 236-207 win in game four, but Wilmington secured the match with a 170-147 victory in game five.
- Daemen rebounded with back-to-back wins over East Coast Conference rival D'Youville. The Wildcats won four of five games en route to a 946-861 win and then rallied from an early deficit to post an 838-781 victory.
- The two wins over D'Youville set up a rematch with Wilmington, with the winner advancing to the championship match.
- Wilmington came out on top again with a 935-888 victory. Daemen held a 591-558 lead after three games, but Wilmington posted a 189-137 win in game four and secured the win with a 188-160 win in game five.
- The loss to Wilmington dropped Daemen into the third-place match with Medaille and the Mavericks posted a 935-814 win over the Wildcats. Medaille jumped out to a 193-149 lead after game one and held a commanding 596-481 lead after three games.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats are idle until the the weekend of Nov. 6-7 when they take part in the Medaille Invitational.
