Wildcats Dominant In Battle Of Conference Unbeatens

Daemen hands Mercy its first ECC loss of the season

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - In a showdown of unbeaten East Coast Conference women's volleyball squads, Daemen looked every bit the part of a conference champion contender as the Wildcats needed only a little more than an hour to take down Mercy in straight sets (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) at Victory Gymnasium this afternoon.

With the win, Daemen improved to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Wildcats have won four straight matches, seven of their last eight overall and five straight ECC matches dating back to the 2019 season. Daemen put down 41 kills with a .263 hitting percentage while limiting the Mavericks to a season-low 26 kills and just a .020 hitting percentage.

Mercy, which had won five of their last six matches, dropped to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Senior Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) led the Wildcats for a second straight match, totaling 11 kills on 30 attempts this afternoon. Logan, who entered the match ranked fifth among the ECC leaders in kills per set (2.93) this season, has recorded 24 kills in the last two matches. Logan added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season (second straight) and the 10th of her career.
  • Daemen's duo of middle hitters also continued their strong seasons as sophomore Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and junior Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) combined for 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Kuliga, who hit .625 in Thursday's win over Edinboro, put down eight kills on a .538 hitting percentage today. Alberts was right behind with seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Both players added three blocks as well.
  • Junior Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in seven kills and two service aces, while grad student Cailtyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) had six kills and three blocks.
  • Sophomore Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) had a match-high 34 assists and classmate Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted a team-high 11 digs.
  • Mercy was paced by Larissa Schneid who totaled nine kills on 28 attempts. Only Schneid (.143) and Tynesha Adams (six kills, .200) had positive hitting percentages for the Mavericks.

THE TURNING POINT
A 7-0 Daemen run set the tone early in the opening set as Logan got off to a fast start hitting at the pin. Mercy climbed within 18-15, but another kills by Logan bookended a 7-1 Wildcat spurt that delivered the first set victory.

Daemen opened a 6-1 lead and never looked back in the second set. They held the Mavericks to a -.029 hitting percentage in the frame.

The most competitive set was the third when Mercy rebounded with nine kills. A kill by Adams evened the count at 15-all, but Daemen responded with another 7-1 run to firmly seize control. Alberts, Kuliga and Alessi all had kills in the run, and Logan added a block as the Wildcats inched closer to the set and match victories. The Mavericks pulled within 23-21 late, but another kill by Logan and a Mercy hitting error sealed it for the Wildcats.

Daemen went on several scoring sprees and their defense limited Mercy to just two 4-0 spurts in the match.
