Daemen Downs Dolphins In Regular Season Finale

Wildcats secure first 20-win season since 2018, take seven-match winning streak into postseason

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Daemen women's volleyball team earned its 20th win of the season, knocking off host Le Moyne 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court this evening.

The Wildcats end the regular season with a 20-7 overall record, and will head into postseason play as winners in seven straight and 16 of their last 18 matches. It marks the 12th 20-win season in program history and the third of the team's NCAA era (2015-present).

Le Moyne, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, saw its overall record drop to 4-16. The Dolphins' roster features more players competing in their first collegiate season (eight) than returning players from their 2019 team (seven) that went 14-13. Le Moyne opted out of the 2020 season entirely due to Covid-19.

Daemen trailed only once in the entire match, a 1-0 deficit to start the second set. They built leads of 15-5 (first set), 16-10 (second set) and 18-5 (third set) and cruised past the Dolphins. The hosts were held to a -.063 hitting percentage after committing 26 attack errors.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Grad student Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) powered down 15 kills - one shy of her season-high for a three-set match - to lead all players. Wildcat middles Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) and Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) split 10 kills, and  Kuliga added a solo block and four block assists. Senior Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) chipped in four service aces.
  • Sophomore Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) returned to action after missing the previous two matches and recorded a match-high 29 assists to go with nine digs.
  • Sophomore Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led the Daemen defense with 14 digs.

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen's last 20-win season came in 2018 when they won the ECC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament, finishing the season at 21-11.
  • Daemen improved to 7-2 in true road matches this season - the most road wins since going 7-3 in 2018.
  • With tonight's win, Daemen improves to 18-4 against in-region opponents this season. Since the 2016 season, Daemen has won 73% of games against East Region opponents (79-29), including a 16-10 mark vs. Northeast-10 Conference teams.
  • Tonight's match marked the 10th meeting in the last 11 seasons between Daemen and Le Moyne. Daemen has won two straight and leads the all-time series 10-8.
  • Daemen is ranked fifth in the NCAA East Region poll released earlier this week by the regional advisory committee. The East Region of NCAA Division II is comprised of teams from the East Coast Conference, Northeast-10 Conference and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and the regional rankings are used to determine at-large bids to the East Regional portion of the NCAA Tournament following the respective conference tournaments later this month.
  • With 15 kills tonight, Meyer has totaled 310 this season, becoming just the fourth player of Daemen's NCAA era to surpass 300 in a season. She's the first to do so since Meghan Ballou notched 304 kills during the 2017 campaign.
  • With 14 digs tonight, Brundage has totaled 399 this season. She is one shy of becoming just the third player to reach 400 digs in a season during Daemen's NCAA era, and the first since Ali Greenwood totaled 404 in 2019.

UP NEXT
Daemen is the No. 1 seed in the East Coast Conference Championship tournament which is set for November 19-20 at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats will face fourth-seeded Molloy in the semifinal round.
