NCAA DIVISION II EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP — COMPLETE RESULTS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's cross country team capped their 2021 season by placing 18th today at the NCAA Division II East Region Championships held today on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College. It marked the first East Region Championship meet to be held since 2019, and it featured 21 competing teams from the East Coast Conference, Northeast-10 Conference and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Shortly after their women's team won its regional championship race, the American International men's team made it a clean sweep for the Yellow Jackets. AIC took top honors with a team score of just 25 points after placing all five of their scorers among the top nine finishers. Southern Connecticut State (50 points) and Stonehill (89 points) claimed second and third places, respectively. AIC, SCSU and Stonehill have each earned a bid to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships which are set for November 20 in Saint Leo, Florida.

AIC junior Ezra Mutai paced the field of 143 competitors, placing first in the 10K race with a time of 29:16.2. He was the lone runner to complete the course in under 30 minutes. Freshman Callum Elson, also from AIC, placed second with a time of 30:56.4.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) led the Wildcats today by placing 44th. Competing in the first 10K race of his career, Moote posted a time of 33:55.7. It ranks as the fourth fastest time by a Daemen runner in a regional championship meet since the program gained full NCAA Division II status in 2015. It's also the fastest time regional championship time by a Daemen runner since Kevin Roginson placed sixth with a time of 31:54.6 in 2016.
  • Sophomore Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) also competed in his first collegiate 10K and placed 72nd with a time of 35:05.8. O'Brien was Daemen's top finisher at the East Coast Conference Championships two weeks ago when he earned Second Team All-ECC honors.
  • Junior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) came in as Daemen's third finisher today, placing 104th with a time of 35:57.6. It marked a new career-best for Clementi in a 10K race as he shaved more than three minutes off his previous best (39:23.1) which he set at the 2019 regional championship meet.
  • Freshman John Balch (Saranac, N.Y.) and sophomore David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scorers today, placing 119th (36:57.9) and 131st (37:52.7) respectively.
  • Freshman Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) also competed for Daemen today, placing 136th with a time of 39:21.4.
