Men's Soccer Falls To Rival Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Junior Dylan Ruiz scored two goals to lead Roberts Wesleyan College to a 4-2 victory over Daemen College today on the RWC campus. Daemen dropped to 0-2-0 on the year, while the host Redhawks improved to 1-1-0.

Daemen had its traditional fall season canceled due to the pandemic and the Wildcats are playing an abbreviated six game schedule this spring. For consistency purposes the season will be labeled as 2020 and all results and statistics will count in the historical records.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The game remained scoreless until Roberts Wesleyan struck for two goals in the span of two minutes late in the first half.
  • The hosts opened the scoring in the 34th minute following a goal by junior Alex Vega. The Redhawks doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Ruiz headed home a long crossing pass from junior Ethan Leonard.
  • The Redhawks took a 3-0 lead with just over 21 minutes to play in the second half when junior Ryan Curtis dribbled the ball into the Daemen box from the left flank and sent a low shot past Daemen net minder Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain).
  • Roberts Wesleyan was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the Daemen box just five minutes later and Ruiz scored his second of the game to give the Redhawks a 4-0 lead.
  • Daemen got on the scoreboard just a minute after Ruiz converted the penalty kick following a RWC own goal. Daemen forward Derek Mancuso (Friendship,N.Y.) sent a cross to the front the RWC goal from the right flank and a Redhawk defender deflected the ball into the RWC net.
  • Daemen closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when freshman Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) scored his second goal of the season. Sophomore Christian Lewin (Bobenheim-Roxheim, Germany) was credited with the assist.
  • The Redhawks posted a 15-14 edge in overall shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • Lerma Escobar, a transfer from Medaille College, went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and made four saves. Sophomore Jared Gibbons stopped five shots for the Redhawks.

GAME NOTES

  • Ruiz was named the East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 after scoring a league-high 18 goals.
  • Roberts Wesleyan has now prevailed in the last two meetings between the two teams and the Redhawks own a 16-4-2 advantage in the all-time series.
