It marked the East Coast Conference opener for both squads. Daemen, which was bidding for just the second 2-0 start to a season in the nine-year history of the program, dropped to 1-1 overall. The Wildcats were coming off an 8-1 victory over Houghton in their season opener March 26. Queens improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in ECC play. It was a full day of action for the Knights who lost 4-3 to Division I Niagara earlier today. The Knights have won the last three ECC championships and have advanced to 18 consecutive NCAA tournaments. They feature a veteran roster with 10 returning players from their 2019-20 team that went 6-1 before the COVID-19 shutdown. DOUBLES REPORT Queens picked up one point in the match score after winning two of three doubles matchups. Tim Ostheimer and Eduardo Marino got the Knights off on the right foot with 6-0 victory on the No. 2 double court over DC's Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Ross Belen (Marlboro, N.Y.). Queens clinched the point moments later when, on the No. 3 doubles court, Julius Schulte and Omar El Shehawey downed the Wildcats' Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Matthew Gary (Depew, N.Y.). The Knights were denied a doubles sweep however as Daemen sophomore Ben Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Greco (Amherst, N.Y.) were victorious on the No. 1 doubles court. The Daemen duo outlasted QC's Moritz Borges and Mariano Bibiloni with a 6-4 final. SINGLES REPORT Daemen was unable to capitalize on the momentum of seeing Davis and Greco close the doubles portion with a win as Queens swept through singles play. Davis, who earned ECC Player of the Week honors following the Wildcats' win over Houghton, provided the stiffest challenge before falling to El Shehawey 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Borges was a 6-3, 6-0 winner in the No. 2 position. Franciso Gonzalez won 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 3 court. Marino (6-0, 6-1), Schulte (6-1, 6-1) and Hugo Evangelista (6-2, 6-0) rounded out the Queens lineup.
