Wildcats Take Doubles Point But Fall To Queens

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Playing for the second time in less than 24 hours, Daemen made some headway but ultimately suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Queens (N.Y.) in East Coast Conference men's tennis action today at Miller Tennis Center.

The victory gave Queens (3-3, 2-0 ECC) a sweep of the two meetings with Daemen this weekend. The Knights defeated Daemen by a 7-0 final yesterday. They are the three-time defending conference champions and today's win extended their ECC winning streak to seven straight matches. Queens, which brings back 10 players from their 2019-20 team, last lost a regular season ECC match on April 13, 2018.

Daemen dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in ECC play with the loss. The Wildcats are playing a 10-match schedule this spring that includes six ECC contests. Daemen, Queens and St. Thomas Aquinas are the lone ECC teams competing this season.

DOUBLES REPORT
Daemen took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning two of the three doubles contests. Sophomore Ben Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Greco (Amherst, N.Y.) improved to 3-0 as a pair this season, winning 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles position over QC's Tim Ostheimer and Eduardo Marino. The Daemen duo was also successful in the No. 1 position yesterday when they knocked off Moritz Borges and Mariano Bibiloni 6-4.

The point went Daemen's way when sophomore Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and senior Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) took the No. 2 doubles match 6-2 over Bibiloni and Omar El Shehawey.

Borges teamed with Julius Schulte to win 6-0 in the No. 3 doubles position to help Queens avoid a sweep.

SINGLES REPORT
As the match shifted to singles play, the momentum swung the way of the Knights. Ostheimer, ranked 48th nationally in the Oracle/ITA Division II singles poll, was pushed in the opening set by Davis, but scored a 7-6, 6-0 win at the top of the lineup. Conversely, after dropping the opening set of his No. 2 singles match 6-1, Vance put up a stiff test against Bibiloni before dropping the second 7-6.

Borges won 6-2, 6-2 over Williamson III in the third singles position, while Francisco Gonzalez won at No. 5 singles without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0). Schulte also added a sweep (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 6 singles position. The No. 5 singles match was left unfinshed.
