Wildcats Take Loss In The Granite State

Stranahan's first goal of the year not enough to lift Wildcats past Hawks

MANCHESTER, N.H. - After a scoreless first half, Daemen surrendered a trio of goals and suffered a 3-1 setback to the St. Anselm Hawks in non-conference women's soccer action today at Melucci Field.

The Wildcats, who were bidding for their second consecutive win, dropped to 1-3-0 on the season. All three of their losses have come on the road. Coach Dan Dolan's Wildcats were coming off a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst in their home opener this past Saturday.

An affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, St. Anselm improved to 2-1-0 this season while out-shooting the Wildcats 21-5. The Hawks return 20 players from their 2020-21 team that was limited to just one contest due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • St. Anselm opened the scoring with a flurry, netting two goals in a span of 59 seconds near the outset of the second half. Regan Pratt's low shot in the 50th minute put the Hawks on the board, and Sydney Wnek made it 2-0 with her shot to the upper right corner of the net just moments later. Pratt and Anna Rigby picked up assists on the goal by Wnek.
  • Daemen managed to halve the St. Anselm lead in the 54th minute when senior midfielder Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season. Stranahan took a feed from redshirt senior Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) and struck a shot to the high right side of the goal, pulling the Wildcats within a goal.
  • But, St. Anselm put the game out of reach when Olivia Maier scored with a shot to the lower right part of the goal in the 77th minute.
  • Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio), the reigning East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made her fourth consecutive start for the Wildcats and contributed five saves.
  • Kate Macaluso got the start between the pipes for the Hawks and was credited with a single save while picking up the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the first between the women's soccer programs at Daemen and St. Anselm. The game was moved up an hour from its original 4 p.m. start time due to expected inclement weather in the forecast for the Manchester area.
  • Stranahan's goal was the eighth of her career, and her first since November 2, 2019 vs. Lincoln (Pa.). Stranahan netted a career-high six goals and totaled 17 points during the 2019 season.
  • Meyer's assist was the sixth of her career, and her first since September 25, 2019 vs. Davis & Elkins.
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • This marked the fourth of a traditional 16-game schedule for the Wildcats which runs through November 6.
