Wildcats Fall To Rival Redhawks In Tight Contest

AMHERST, N.Y. - After more than 78 minutes of scoreless play, the Daemen men's soccer team surrendered a pair of late goals in a 2-0 loss to long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference action today at Karrer Field.

RWC's Alex Perez Vega found the back of the net at the 78:08 mark on a free kick from just outside the box. His shot curled around the Daemen wall and into the upper right corner of the goal despite a diving effort from Daemen goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) who got a piece of the ball, but not enough to keep it in play.

With Daemen pressing forward looking for the equalizer, the Redhawks were able to counter and iced the game with a goal by Johanz Tusiime in the final minute of play. Curtis Ryan and Dylan Ruiz were each credited with assists on the play. Ryan broke up the right side and his centering feed was tapped on by Ruiz, eventually finding Tusiime who came streaking into the right side of the box to finish the play.

Roberts Wesleyan held a 15-10 advantage in total shots, placing six attempts on frame to just one for the Wildcats. Seven of Daemen's shot attempts came in the first half. They generated some solid chances off the feet of Arthur Djengue Bille (Paris, France), Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) and Colin Archibald (North Tonawanda, N.Y.). Pontus Lundin (Asmundtorp, Sweden) had the lone shot on goal for the Wildcats.

Lerma Escobar made two saves for the Wildcats. Daemen also registered two team saves, both in the second half.

Daemen, which was coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss Saturday at District of Columbia, saw its overall record fall to 2-5-0. The Wildcats are now 1-2-0 in ECC play. Roberts Wesleyan snapped a three-game winless streak, improving to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.

Daemen returns to home action this Saturday, October 2 when they host Molloy for an 11 a.m. contest at Karrer Field.
