Women's Soccer Falls To Wilmington In Season Opener, 2-0

Wildcats allow goals in 26th and 69th minutes to start 2021 campaign

WILMINGTON, DEL. – Coming off an academic year full of twists and turns, excited would be an understatement to describe the emotions Daemen women's soccer had when they saw the calendar flip to September, once again filled with games on their schedule.

After having their 2020 schedule postponed to this past spring due to COVID-19 protocols, the Wildcats began their 2021 campaign with a traditional out-of-state road trip for a Friday matinee against their fellow Wildcats located in Wilmington, Del.

But the blue-and-white will have to wait a little longer to secure their first win of this new season.

Behind goals scored by veterans Kasie Lambert and Lauren Hoelke in the 26th minute and 69th minute, respectively, Wilmington (Del.) secured a 2-0 victory over Daemen in a contest held at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex.

With the loss today, Daemen women's soccer dropped to 0-1-0 to kick off the new campaign while Wilmington (Del.) moves to 1-0-0 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • After senior Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) recorded the first shot of the season for Daemen, the Wildcats found themselves in a tight defensive battle with Wilmington (Del.). Then, in the 26th minute, Kasie Lambert found the back of the net unassisted to give Wilmington (Del.) a 1-0 lead. While Daemen had multiple opportunities off corner kicks late in the first half and into the second half and Wilmington (Del.) also had scoring attempts at times, the scoring did not pick up again until the 69th minute. Here, graduate student and midfielder Lauren Hoelke scored off an assist from sophomore forward Rockesha Daye to help secure the victory for Wilmington (Del.)
  • Wilmington outshot Daemen, 20-12, including nine shots on goal in the contest. Daemen, however, outedged their opponent in corner kicks, 7-5.
  • Junior forward Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) had a team-high two shots on goal for Daemen. Sophomore Lauren Cuisia (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded a shot on goal as did freshmen Baylin Tighe (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) who both made their Wildcat debut this afternoon.
  • Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) made her first start of the season and recorded seven saves in the loss. Today marked the third start of her Daemen career.

GAME NOTES
  • Today was the first time Daemen allowed multiple goals in a contest since a 2-0 loss to St. Rose on March 27, 2021 at Karrer Field. This was the first game of their abbreviated 2020 schedule that was postponed to spring 2021 due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • Today was only the second all-time meeting between Daemen and Wilmington (Del.). This was the first meeting since a 2-1 victory for Wilmington (Del.) on Sept. 3, 2018. Wilmington (Del.) now leads the series, 2-0.
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • Tonight marked the first of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
