AMHERST, N.Y. - Redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) paced a balanced attack with 20 points to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to a 61-58 victory over Molloy College tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.
Daemen, which was playing its first game since Dec. 17, has now won four-straight games (and six of its last eight) and improved to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in East Coast Conference play. Daemen entered the game ranked seventh in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll. The Lions dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Molloy scored the first 11 points of the game and the Lions never trailed during the first half. Daemen connected on just 3-of-16 shots in the first quarter and trailed 17-6 after the first 10 minutes. The host Wildcats found their shooting range in the second quarter, but still trailed by 10 points, 24-14, with just over two minutes left before halftime. Back-to-back buckets by sophomore Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) and Filbert sparked an 8-2 spurt by Daemen which cut the Molloy lead to four points, 26-22. The Lions would take a 28-23 lead into intermission.
Molloy built the lead back up to nine points, 41-32, after senior Gabriella Aspuru scored with 3:36 left in the third quarter, but the Wildcats closed out the quarter with a 12-6 run and the hosts trailed by just three points, 47-44, heading into the final quarter. Daemen scored the final seven points of the third quarter and opened up the fourth quarter with 10 unanswered points to take a 54-47 lead. The Wildcats then went scoreless for three and half minutes, which allowed the Lions to make it a one possession game, 54-51, with just over three minutes to play. Aspuru converted two free throws with 1:34 left to make it 55-53 Daemen, but neither team scored again until Filbert swished two free throws with 15 seconds to play. Aspuru scored again with 11 ticks left, but Daemen answered with two free throws by senior Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) which gave the hosts a 59-55 lead. Molloy drained a three-pointer with three seconds left, but Daemen again converted two free throws to close out the scoring.
