Wildcats Cruise Past Dolphins, Run Winning Streak To Eight Games

Sischo Becomes The All-Time Leading Scorer From A New York Collegiate Institution

AMHERST, N.Y. - Redshirt senior Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) paced a balanced attack with 14 points to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 91-52 victory over The College of Staten Island tonight at Lumsden Gym on the Daemen Campus.

Sischo added yet another milestone to his impressive resume, as he passed former SUNY Geneseo standout Scott Fitch to become the all-time leading scorer among all NCAA men's basketball programs in the state of New York. Sischo has now totaled 2,638 points over his career, surpassing the 2,634 points that Fitch netted at Geneseo from 1990-94.

Daemen extended its winning streak to eight-straight games and remained atop the East Coast Conference standings with a perfect 10-0 league record. The Wildcats improved to 13-6 overall. Daemen has won 17 of its last 19 conference games dating back to the start of last season. CSI which is transitioning to the NCAA Division II ranks from Division III, dropped to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the league.

Daemen entered the game ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region Men's Basketball Media Poll.

Daemen scored the first 18 points of the game and never looked back. The Wildcats hit four three-pointers during the game-opening spurt and a triple by graduate student Kyle Harris (Buffalo, N.Y.) capped the run and gave Daemen an 18-0 lead six minutes into the contest. The Daemen lead was 25 points after Sischo scored with 7:19 left in the half, and the Wildcats would go on to take a 49-20 lead into intermission.


Daemen secured the win by outscoring the Dolphins 19-6 at the start of the second half. Sischo scored the first six points of the run and a bucket by redshirt junior Trevor Book (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) with 12:43 left to play capped the spurt and gave the hosts a 68-26 lead. CSI came no closer than 30 points (74-44) the rest of the way.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • All 13 players that saw action for Daemen tonight scored in the game and four players scored in double figures.
  • Sischo played just 22 minutes and connected on 7-of-13 shots. He has now scored 10+ points in 84 of his last 85 games.
  • Sophomore Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) went 3-of-3 from downtown and totaled 11 points.
  • Junior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) was also perfect from downtown (3-for-3) and totaled 11 points, six assists and four rebounds.
  • Graduate student Sean Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists in just 19 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore Bryce Waterman drilled four three-pointers and scored 12 points for the Dolphins, while junior Chris Velasquez added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen returns 11 players, including all five starters, from their 2020-21 team that won the NCAA Division II East Region Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight.
  • Daemen shot 53-percent (37-for-70) from the field overall and made 11-of-22 from downtown. The Wildcats have now shot over 50-percent from the field in each of their last five games.
  • CSI shot just 30-percent (9-of-30) in the first half and finished 21-of-60 (35%) from the field overall. The Dolphins went 6-of-24 from three-point range.
  • Daemen had a season-high 24 assists tonight. The Wildcats have now dished out 15 or more assists in 12-straight games.
  • Daemen posted a 45-29 edge in total rebounds. The Wildcats have out rebounded their opponent in each of their last 11 games.
  • Daemen finished with an edge in points off turnovers (19-9), second chance points (13-7) and points in the paint (44-18).
  • Daemen is off to its best start in conference play (10-0) since winning its first eight league games in 2003-04 when the Wildcats were competing as a member of the now-defunct American Mideast Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
  • A two-time consensus All-American and three-time ECC Player of the Year, Sischo was recently named to the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List. He is NCAA Division II's active leader in career points (2,638), rebounds (1,355) and double-doubles (76). He is the all-time leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder in Daemen and ECC history. He ranks 21st in points and ninth in rebounds among the all-time NCAA Division II career leaders.
  • Mason has made at least one three-pointer in 13 straight games and leads the team in three-pointers made (45). He is shooting a league-best 51-percent (45-88) from behind the arc.
  • Fasoyiro stands 47 points shy of 1,000 for his career. He totaled 494 points during his three seasons at Franklin Pierce and has netted 459 points in 35 games at Daemen (13.1 per game).
