Cats Stuff Dogs 3-1 In Crosstown Volleyball Rivalry

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team resumed the second half of East Coast Conference play this afternoon, earning the short jaunt across town to win their sixth straight ECC victory in a 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15) win over D'Youville on Saturday. The Wildcats have won 18-straight conference matches.

Daemen out-killed D'Youville 61-40 in the victory to finish with a .260 hitting percentage on the day. Four Wildcats earned career-high statistics in the win.

Senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) had an outstanding offensive performance, knocking down a career-high 21 kills of Daemen's 61 kills for a .333 hitting percentage. 

The Wildcats move to 13-3 on the season, and a perfect 6-0 in ECC play. D'Youville moves to 4-19, and 0-6 in ECC. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Burns led the team offensively for the ninth time this season. She finished with 21 kills (5.25 kills/set), and added two ace and 8 digs (2.0 digs/set). 
  • Graduate student Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 22 digs (5.5 digs/set), while adding 15 kills (3.75 kills/set) on the day to earn her sixth double-double of the season. Logan totaled three service aces for a season-high, and added an assisted block in the victory.
  • Junior outside hitter Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) earned a season-high 12 kills (3.0 kills/set) with just three errors for a .300 hitting percentage. She added two assisted blocks and two digs.
  • Senior defensive specialist Mickaley Monahan (Saline, Mich.) tallied a career-high 24 digs (6.0 digs/set), while adding two aces to move to second on the team in service aces with 17 on the season.
  • Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) took over setting duties for the Wildcats today. The junior setter finished with 48 assists (12.0 assists/set) on the day, and nearly tallied a double-double (assists-digs), finishing with eight digs on the day. She also added four kills for a .286 hitting percentage, and two services aces.
  • Senior middle blocker Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) appeared in her second game this season, totaling four kills and two assisted blocks in the game. 
  • Senior middle blocker Shelby Kersten (Alden, N.Y.) tallied five kills and just two errors for a .273 hitting percentage. She added four digs, a solo block and an assisted block in the victory. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Three Daemen players totaled double-digit kills this afternoon. Burns, Logan and Giraud combined to earn 48 of Daemen's 61 total kills in the match. 
  • Burns' 21 career-high kills is five more than her previous high (16). 
  • The Wildcats totaled double-digit aces for the fifth match this season. Daemen put up ten aces to average 2.5 aces/set. Logan led the team with three aces, while Monahan, Burns, Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.), Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and Masic all tallied two aces a piece. Junior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) served up one ace. 
  • Burns totaled seven of Daemen's 17 fourth-set kills.
  • The Wildcats only allowed D'Youville to earn double-digit kills in one set this afternoon. The Saints' 15 second-set kills were the most they scored all day. They put up eight kills in the first and fourth sets, and nine in the third set. 
GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats own a 53-3 record in sets during ECC regular season play dating back to the start of the 2021 season.
  • This was the 8th meeting between the Wildcats and the Saints. Daemen has won all eight matches between the crosstown rivals.
  • Daemen has won eight straight matches this season.
UP NEXT

The Wildcats host Gannon on Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a midweek matchup. The match is slated to start at 6 PM at Lumsden Gymnasium.
